Oh, I dunno, - speed, quickness, jumping ability, strength, lateral movement. Doesn't seem all that complicated. Perhaps it is for some folks.
How much have you actually seen McDermott play? How much of what you've seen is filtered through a pre-existing set of biases?
I'm sorry, I'm just highly skeptical that those commenting on McDermott and comparing him (inevitably) to other white player (and usually white busts) are basing their conclusions on actual, un heavily filtered, objective knowledge.
Case in point, there are plenty of 'unathletic' black players (we still haven't defined athletic clearly), but inevitably the comparison goes to some white dude. That by itself suggests to me that stereotyping is at play.
You may be an exception, I don't know, but in general I'm very skeptical and am inclined to believe that what we're observing here is for the most part racial stereotyping and not honest, objective analysis.
