Trade deadline discussion

Any trade we make to improve our title contention odds has to consider the closing lineup. Getting Smart as a 6th man would be great, but if you close with him who is sitting? Personally I am not interested in Smart as a replacement for any of our starters.

Ultimately the Jazz need a legit two way player who does not compromise in age, size, or athleticism. Unfortunately I have no idea who that player is. Short of that, I think we're looking for what we've always been looking for: A stretch 4 that is big enough to be a secondary rim protector.
bobby portis. he's got a player option with Milwaukee so basically a FA this summer

This is actually an interesting trade Andy suggests:

This move actually serves a few purposes.
That's kind of interesting... unprotected picks don't get traded for good reason... we are relatively safe in 2024, but that is a way of giving up something that may be nothing... selling speculation for something real in Williams. Allows you to do a Joe trade with more confidence.

Royce would be the one sitting.
That doesn't accomplish much then. We still have two really bad defenders in our closing lineup and are undersized in virtually every position except center.

Yeah, I think they pretty much love him in Milwaukee. I have a hard time seeing him go anywhere. I certainly would be interested if he did become available though.

It’s a good idea. They should pay Andy the salary difference between Udoka and Williams if it happens.

GMs are so risk averse on stuff like that I doubt they’d do it… but it’s likely something that should be done more often.

milwaukee has a pretty high tax bill and portis's getting paid peanuts over there. I think he'd go to a team that gives him the most money this summer

Potential JC fits would be:

-Toronto
-NO
-Washington
-Cleveland - They are rumored to like Eric Gordon, Schroeder... so maybe. IF they take salary beyond this year on a guard it likely means Sexton isn't in the future plans.
-Clippers

I could maybe see Dallas or Atlanta liking him as well as the guy that carries the offense when Luka or Trae are off the court.

I think you could get an expiring contract for him or maybe NO does like Temple and Hayes (with Hayes going to a third team like OKC). With JC it is very eye of the beholder so there may very well not be a good market out there for him.

We're going to have two really bad defenders in our closing lineup regardless. Unless they trade Bogey, which is extremely unlikely.

If both were available, would you take either Tobias Harris or Harrison Barnes for Bogey? Both have been rumored to be available. Neither are defensive specialists by any means. StatMuse has Harris's defensive rating at a 108 and Barnes as a 119 (Bojan is a 112). They are both good shooters, though not as a good as Bogey. Harris historically was a 40%+ shooter though has not been so in Philly and has been especially bad this year. Both are three years younger, an inch taller, and have much better rebounding numbers. Harris has that massive contract with two years left after this one. Barnes has a very similar contract to Bogey.

I think Barnes is marginally better than Bogey, but am not sure he is enough of an upgrade to attach whatever pick might be necessary to convince the Kings to make the deal. Harris is a little interesting as I could foresee a scenario where the Jazz got involved in a 3-team trade that moved Simmons to another team and routed Harris to us. That Jazz would have to send out Ingles/Clarkson with Bogey to match salary, but could potentially get Harris by helping facilitate a Simmons trade without having to give up a draft pick.

Neither player would be enough, but one of those guys plus an upgrade for Clarkson could be a step in the right direction.

I hoped and prayed that the Jazz would get Harris in free agency, but we had to settle for Bogey. I think he is one of the most perfect fits we could hope for, he would compliment the rest of the team exceptionally well. However, that contract is absolutely obscene, and he wouldn’t be a big enough upgrade to win a title so he wouldn’t be worth it. You’re right that Barnes is only a marginal upgrade so I think I’d rather just keep Bogey.

I think the goal would be to trade for Barnes without giving up Bogey, but it depends on his market. Harris is a bad contract now.

I think the Jazz are looking at Barnes and probably also Kuzma as a way to put more size on the floor.

Re: Barnes, I think perhaps in a vacuum he's a better player overall, but I'd put the ceiling of that move at probably being a wash.

Re: Harris, he's making $36M this year and $79.5M over the following two years. Bojan makes $18.7 this year and 19.5M next year. That's going to be a massive tax issue and a swap of those two may again be a wash. The biggest obvious upgrade is rebounding with either deal, and I don't think you're getting enough bang for your buck on either. Plus on Harris, which other player(s) are you losing to make up the additional $18M or so you'd need to match?

A wild card for Bogey trade would be Deandre Hunter. The kid shoots 40% from deep this season and has all the tools to be an elite defender. Atlanta reportedly making everyone not named Trae Young and Clint Capela available.

We’d hate Harris in a month. Bogey is straight up better. He also makes half as much… we’d need a **** ton of stuff if we did that deal.

I like Deandre Hunter but perhaps we can make a different deal. I like Bogey and people are being harsh on him. He is a guy who can make shots when every thing breaks down.

So the Andy Larsen suggestion of removing the protections on the OKC pick has me thinking what value that would have as a hypothetical asset, meaning you trade it as "a first rounder in 2026 [I honestly can't remember what year it is] if it is 1-10" and using that in a package with one of our other guys.

2024 for OKC… it would make the 2026 pick easier to trade because it would have less restrictions… we are getting in dangerous territory at that point. But hell by 2026 the robot overlords will have taken over and kept only the humans they like as pets… so basketball won’t matter. Make the 2026 top 4 protected if you get something amazing.

So get Kenrich Williams for removing protections… then send a very unprotected pick for… what? I’d probably see if you could pick up Melton with it and JC (maybe Cleveland will do a straight Ricky for JC three team deal)? Melton has been a little lost in the shuffle in Memphis and is likely not getting more PT when Brooks gets back.
