Hayward is so underrated on Jazzfanz. 70% of the community here wants to trade him. And I suspect 10% of the community here would trade him for a shovel and a 10 dollar gift card to Best Buy.

Teams that scout and draft well, like the Jazz, will almost always have solid options inside the lottery. I'd much rather have the Jazz hope the player they pick is as good (or better) than any of the players listed above. I'd take any of them over Covington right now, and whoever the Jazz draft will cost between $3-4 million per year on their first contract, with Bird rights and the option to match any RFA contract offers.

Covington could be really good. We don't know because his team was garbage. Guys that can defend the wing, shoot the ball, and rebound like a big are incredibly valuable. He makes next to nothing for two years and can step in and contribute now. The more I look at Covington the more I would want him on our team.

I think we can find a player better than him, but the odds are around 50/50... add in that we get the 24th and 26th and we get two shots to land a winner. I think our shot to get a cheap contributor with two picks in the 20s are as good as staying at 12. As you noted Rudy and Rodney were both drafted in the 20s.

Also, if you look at the last 10 years of picks 10-14 about 30% of the guys would be better than Covington is... have to look at the whole sample... not just the ones we like in hindsight. For every Klay there are 10 Xavier Henry's.

That said... if there is the guy you love there at 12 and think is Klay or Kawhi then pick him. Looking at the list of guys that are supposedly going to be available with my untrained eyes I'd rather play the odds.
 
If we keep Hayward, we have to use this pick wisely to get a wing. We would do bad business to pass on getting a guy like Hield, Murray, Luwawu, Valentine or another so we can draft at 24 and 26. I don't see a trade getting a good wing so we have to maximize our draft spot.

I don't disagree with your overall assessment of Covington, but I'm not willing to part with #12 to get him. I used Rudy and Rodney as examples to show how the Jazz have drafted well regardless of where they're picking. That doesn't mean that they're guaranteed to get a good player late in the first. Odds are actually against them hitting those picks. The success of Lyles makes me feel much more confident in them staying at 12.

I would like them to make a move up into the late first, so if they really want to get Covington, I'd much rather see them package a group of assets for him as a move up from 2nd round picks instead of moving down from 12. Burke, Burks (although very reluctantly), cash and a future 1st round pick (maybe the OKC pick) instead. Something along those lines.
