I got to thinking, the one thing that has kept us from winning a championship is defense. For years Dallas was thought as a soft defensive team, they go out and get Tyson Chandler and overnight Dallas is transformed into a good defensive team that eventually wins the championship.

So my thought is what defensive C's are out there that the Jazz could get for ether Millsap or Jefferson? Who is that one defensive presence that could turn this team into a contender? Who is our Tyson Chandler?

Didn't make much of a contribution in the Heat series but overall Haywood also was a big part of that - he kept Chandler fresh and allowed Tyson to play hard w/out worrying about picking up fouls. Haywood played a big role in the Lakers series, coming in and banging with Bynum and getting physical with Gasol. Having two defensive centers with 12 fouls apiece is a tremendous luxury.

Also, don't credit all of Dallas' defensive success to Chandler. He was always a good defender and rebouner - but when he was with the Hornets not many people viewed him as a guy who would win someone a championship with his defense. IMO much more should go to Dwayne Casey and the team-defensive concepts he got all the players to buy into.

Knocks it out of the park yet again.

I agree completely team defense is the biggest key. They also have good defender in marion. That is one reason i am big on getting Granger.

If we are talking about defensive stalwarts, who is going to be that for the Jazz? I know that Hayward got beat up by fans/writers/announcers but I always felt that it was his big guys that were failing him down low. Hayward had a breakout game against Kobe and suddenly everyone thought that he could play good defense. The combination of Favors and Hayward is exciting because htey will both make a difference on both ends of the floor. I guess I should say they could make a difference on both ends of the floor. I hope that they really are working hard getting better. I would feel great about a Jazz team that only wins 20+ games if I can see that the young guys are trying to get better.

We may already have the answer in Favors.

Agreed. I think Favors will mature into our defensive presence in the paint, where Kanter may hopefully compliment him w/ his offensive prowess!

Thus, trade Jefferson & keep Millsap as our 3rd guy in that rotation.
Hmm... would anyone want to trade Hayward/Jefferson for Granger/Hibbert? (I'm 50/50 on this)

Dallas did not just improve their defense with Chandler. They got a new coach. They added quite a few defensive minded players besides Chandler. Kidd, Stevenson, Haywood, Marion and Butler are all above average defenders added to their roster over the last few years.

Basically they decided with Terry and Dirk they had 2 terrific offensive players and needed to surround them with defensive players that could also add a little to the offense. So they got rid of all their offense only players except the 2 best. Replaced them with defensive minded players. And changed their defensive system.

Getting a defensive minded big is something I hope we have solved with the addition of Favors. Now lets see if the system changes and if we can get enough defensive players at other positions while not losing too much offensive firepower.
