Trade Rumors Involving the Jazz

Wow. San Antonio could sign Ayton to a big contract and not even worry about Phoenix matching.

That means Rudy is still in play for Charlotte and Atlanta to compete over.
Detroit, Indiana, and SA could all sign him outright and would have interest. Most likely scenario imo is that Suns leverage the ability to match and arrange a sign and trade to Detroit for Grant, or Indiana for Turner and something else, or SA for Poeltl and Vassell or one of their other young players.

Suns are cheaping out a bit here... I know Ayton isn't perfect but they are about to ruin their run by being cheap... you hate to see it.

If I'm Detroit or San Antonio, I sign him and make Phoenix match. Those teams are so young and thin that giving up youth or picks hurts their chances to build. Sign Ayton to a max and make Phoenix call. I would rather overpay Ayton than give up assets on a slightly cheaper contract.

Well here is the deal... even if its a toxic one then Phoenix will match and trade him mid-season. Even if they have to do the Ben Simmons and he sits out. He won't walk for nothing. If you are the team that offers him the sheet that gets matched you can't trade for him for 12 months. The other thing is it will tie up your cap space for like 2 weeks. They have a few days to match the offer but can delay physicals and he can't sign it until after the moratorium. All the deals are agreed upon that first week... no one is going to sit around and wait to get their offer and so you will miss out on the other free agents.

Phoenix has to balance what the trade offer is now vs what it will be midseason and the BS they have to endure to get there. So they may take a lower offer. So if Poetl and Vassell are on the table you might take that with a smile on your face. Detroit may not have good uses for their cap space so they sign him to a poison offer and if they win great and if not nbd... but if they really want him... you work the sign and trade angle.

If they just let him walk they won't open up cap space and they lose a guy that was the #1 pick and helped their team to a finals appearance and get absolutely nothing in return. They won't let that happen.

As of today, I still think the best trade for us is trading Rudy to Atlanta and getting two of Hunter, Collins and Huerter. If we can make that happen, that's a movement towards youth and athleticism.

Then we try to trade Bojan and Conley for more of the same. If Don wants out, we trade him for even more youth and athleticism.

We don't have to tear it down and tank.

Phoenix took this chance when they didn't extend him.

Now, the last thing they want to do is match on a max deal. Puts them in a bind especially if Ayton and coach had a falling out. I don't think this situation is like Simmons. Philly signed Simmons, gave him money, then he got hurt then acted like a diva. Ayton has been there working hard and Phoenix just didn't want to pay him. So having him on the books for max and being unable to trade him for a while and could become an issue.

Detroit and San Antonio could cave and send minor assets, but they might not have to. If they do, they might not have to send much.

I really dont understand why anyone would want to max Ayton. Not that I think he sucks or anything, he just isnt elite at anything. He's never going to be a NBA All-Star IMO or challenge for any of the All-Defensive teams.

Average rim protection. Doesnt draw fouls. Kind of soft. He has great touch and a budding mid-range game, but idk, just seems like a bad idea to me. San Antonio is probably his best fit just because Popovich probably respects his game more than any other coach in the NBA ( I would assume). I would assume SA would get his shot attempts up to something like 15 per game and maybe then you have something resembling more All-Star numbers (like 20/10, but even then in the West it's hard to beat Gobert/Jokic/Davis). IDK, just the fact that the dude has never upped his ability to get the FT line for a guy who is supposed to have a great combo of athleticism/touch/size really concerns me.

No... you are wrong... the last thing they want to do is have him walk for nothing. They were comfortable with the risk in not extending him because in the worst case scenario they match a 4 year max (he wanted 5 last summer). He likely will play as he would be fined for not showing up. He won't lose all his trade value... if there are multiple max's out there for him it means he has a market.

They have a bunch of other ways to cut salary short term and don't have a huge issue until 2 years from now.

Detroit and SA are bidding against each other and other teams.... so it will end up being something of substance. Even if Detroit just send like Stewart and KO then Phoenix would create a trade exception they could use as well. Its not an amazing haul but he won't walk for nothing... and the team that does get him to sign an offer sheet without a sign and trade is the LEAST likely team to get him.

Also the thing that sucks with AYton is that he played with Chris Paul.

It's never going to get better for him in his career than Chris Paul. He might go to a system that gives him more shots, but he's likely never going to get better shots than he has gotten these past two years for the rest of his career.

Its still about upside. They don't post him up because that isn't their game. He's still young. I think its ambitious to project a lot of growth/improvement.

But he's a young top 10 center and free agency always results in overpays in the borderline AS tier. I wouldn't want to give LaVine $200M either but that's what you have to do.
