Trey Lyles Highlights from Last Night #3

Is it just me, or are we entering a phase of building up our second unit? Neto/Cotton, Burks, Johnson, Lyles, and Pleiss seem to have good potential and could be something someday. And this is exactly how it should be, right? As our starting five starts to solidify, naturally we should be grabbing good second string talent as our draft placement begins to move toward the 20's. I think now is a good time for the Jazz to grab better than deserved talent because we are transitioning from door mat to Western Conference playoff team. Trey Lyles with the 12th pick was huge, based on talent alone, we should have picked around 23 or so.

I feel good, this team is coming together.
 
Having watched Trey Lyles through summer league I was concerned that he didn't play physically, didn't rebound well, or set very good screens. Color me a homer, but I am not as worried about it anymore. If you watch Trey Lyles through the perspective that he's only played wing the last year and a half, you realize that's the skill set he is portraying on the court. He has nice jab step moves, he plays defense by moving his feet well - not above the rim, doesn't get wide aggressive under the basket, plays the PnR poorly as the screener but very well as the ball handler, good passer.

I think we have a unique player, but I can totally understand why Lindsay brought back Booker as a stop-gap while Lyles gets acclimated.

There is no way he averaged 5.5 assists.

I think that may have been the rebounding average.

I feel good, this team is coming together.

Exactly. And the other parts of building up the team are upgrading starters, which we did with Gobert vs. Kanter and creating team and unit chemistry. Team chemistry from what we hear is probably best in the league. And the unit chemistry might be tweaked a bit by inserting Hood over Burks as a starter.

AS you said, now it's time to focus on the 2nd and 3rd units. Some of the old backups are being pushed down and replaced by better players. That's a good evolution. From 1-15, Utah might be one of the deepest teams in the league next year. I am REALLY excited for training camp and pre-season to begin!

Not to mention a monumental upgrade to coaching.

They are also building a complete team. By that I mean look at all the possible lineups. You can go big with Exum, Hayward, Lyles, Favors, Gobert. You can also go small with something like Cotton, Burks, Hood, Lyles, Favors/Booker. That's more of an example but we have players at ever position that are interchangeable. On paper, we should be able to play any style of ball.

Great point. We've always had some versatility, but never as much as now. That versatility also allows Utah to survive some injuries. You can slide players around to minimize the negative impact.
