Two kids is too many

My current boy Rex (healer, cattle dog mix) is the best for not having a fence. He never leaves the yard. I could leave him out front by himself and other dogs or even cats could go by and he still wouldn't leave.

He loves to fetch and at times the ball will go into the street. He runs right to the edge of the road and stops. Just stares greedily at the ball but never well set foot into the road. Waits for me to get it

Haha, she still can't quite bark yet. She whines a bit, but not too much. It's only our 2nd day with her, so she's still adjusting. We're both pretty good at ignoring her when she whines. I would imagine she can wear a harness, we just don't have one her size. Putting it on a collar is a good idea, but she's just so tiny/scared being outside alone right now, especially cause we have a ton of a larger wild cats running around. I'll have to shoot those. Once she's bigger she'll live outside and in the garage. I just don't want her to be too scared at a young age, cause then they don't turn out so well.
 
In our experience barking is both an individual trait of the dog (to include breed, some breeds are more prone to it) as well a a learned trait. Some dogs gonna bark no matter what.

Dawg, this little pup willingly walked into her crate and would stay there for a while the very first day we brought her home. Pretty incredible. Everything I read said that I would have to bribe them with treats, but she doesn't have a problem with it. So that's made life a lot easier.

Definitely.
I had a boxer ( named tyson) that I tried to crate train. He would just cry and cry and eventually he won. I never did crate train him but it's not necessary (though usually preferred)

Agree 100%
Potty training imo is all about praise when they do go outside...... I find puppy pee pads to be effective in the early stages as well as long as you periodically remove one to decrease the area.

I would never punish them for in house potty.
That simply draws attention to what had happened. I would rather not have that on my pups mind and instead have then remember the praise that they received for outside pottying

It's much different I suppose because we had two large adult dogs. However, they had never been house-trained and were full-on adults. Before we bought our house we lived in a condo and had puppy pads (which SUCKED) and that's all they ever used each day, every day. So when we bought the house and moved in August 1st, I had one month to train them. I brought poop from our previous place and put it in our backyard. I let them out and they smelled the poop. They peed. They pooped. I let them in and praised them. I let them out about every 3-5 hours the first few days. Then, I decided to let them out, let them in after, and leave the house for 20 minutes. I did, came back (they had been fine in the house) and immediately let them out upon my return on their runners. The next day, I did it but stayed away for about 45 minutes. The next day a little over an hour. Then two hours. After four weeks, they were up to 6-7 hours alone. But each time I returned I let them out immediately. And now, our dog (the other one had to be put down) is good up to about 14 hours. And she's 11 years old too.

Rex is not crate trained either and he is great and never goes in the house.

No homo, you sound cute and sensitive to her needs. I did LOL at the shooting of the cats though.

On a side note, I highly recommend doggy insurance. And make sure it covers blown out knees. Labs are notorious for this.
 
Cute heeler fish! I like those, but our neighbors have cattle and I was a bit afraid they would get in after the cows. That would be bad.

Haha yeah, I'm a softie. It's been hard for me to ignore her whining, but I'm doing it. Thanks for the insurance info, wife and I were discussing it today and were planning on doing it, but I have no idea where/who to get it through.

Thanks for all other info on training, super useful for me. And sorry for hijacking this thread so much.
