Most directly affected. . . . Samar and Leyte, Masbate, Romblon, Mindoro. Cebu, Negros, Panay, and Palawan will have some parts heavily impacted as well. I've seen reports from Bohol, over a hundred miles off the track. I've seen pics from the cities of Legazpi on the southernmost reach of Luzon Island, the Bicol region. . . . One video I saw was from Cebu City, also about a hundred miles off the track. The sea surge was a killer. . . . 10 to 20 ft with an impact comparable to a tsunami of that height. Pictures out so far show a lot of tin roofs blown off buildings, houses moved off their foundations by the sea.

I went with the local name "Yolanda" because it reminds me of the most severe typhoon I've been in ..... Typhoon Yoling(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Patsy_(1970)) in November 1972, whose eye passed over Manila. The modern apartment I was in had it's roof lifted enough to crack the walls. It was the most powerful typhoon to affect Manila from the beginning of record-keeping in 1865 until 2009.

I was in an area in 1972 that was flooded from June through July by a series of seven typhoons so close together it didn't actually stop raining for forty days. . . .

Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda followed on the tracks of another typhoon just a week earlier, and another is forming and moving on the same path now, due to hit in about four days. . . .

This will make mudslides in mountainous areas, and further delay repairs to roads and making contact with remote areas.

I've been watching the ocean surface temp data gathered by satellite for the past several years, and following some of the expert discussions. At this time the ocean east of the Philippines has an unusual warm temp, which holds for an unusual depth. A typhoon lives of the heat in the sea, usually churning it enough to mix in some cooler water from a little deeper. . . .

yah. . . . I don't think so. . . .

we don't want these contraptions in the ocean, breaking up and scattering all over planet earth as more floating debris 'islands", or when the tires finally fill with water. . . sinking to ocean floor and emitting their toxic vapors for thousands of years.

There are folks who are working on ideas to harness wave energy for generating electricity. . . . well whatever they come up with is going to be smashed to smithereens as well within a twenty year weather cycle, just like a lot of shoreline construction. . .

We need the warm surface water because without it the droughts we'd face are worse. People who choose to be on or near the ocean just need to understand it's potential and maybe prepare more for eventualities. . . . better construction, farther from shore, where possible.

A lot of the folks cogitating on global warming don't get my idea that warm ocean surfaces are necessary to build land and polar ice to get our ice ages started. . . .A spike in ocean surface temps, and global temps is factually known to precede ice age onsets. Yep, this is the beginning of the next one.

The best design for one of these I have seen used cement floats, like they use for large pontoon bridges, and recycled plastic as the tube for the heat sink. And it wouldn't take too many to have an impact. And if we were able to reduce surface energy enough to reduce the power of cyclones, not eliminate them, it would have very little effect on evaporation. Look star trek level of weather control isn't going to happen if we are afraid to take risks.

well, just call me Mr. Grumps or paint a little black cloud over my head in the funny papers if you like. . .

I'm all over the map on technology. I like nuclear energy and windmills. I want to change the wilderness areas to well-manicured British Gardens, too. Well, . . . . hmmmm. . . . at least I want a pipe from the 11000-ft plateau down to my generator a mile closer to the center of the earth so the water can provide me power as well as irrigate my fields. Why do I use perfectly good electricity to pump water up from a hundred feet below and pressurize my irrigation to spray twenty feet above the ground. It costs me a thousand dollars a month to do it that way. . . . when I could earn five thousand dollars a month selling surplus energy to the power grid. . . . without any carbon footprint, mind you. . . . and have three times as much water to boot. The elk, cougars, deer and birds would consider my pipe as about the same thing as a rock, and would sit on it to warm themselves in the sun.

I like heat pump applications. I want to take the summer swelter and store it in the ground all summer long. . . . and pump it back to warm my place in the winter. The heat is free, except for the motor to pump the exchange fluiid through to compression and expansion cycle. . .

But I've had my fill of best intentions and unintended consequences for our grand ideas as well. . . .
