Utah Jazz Draft Archtype

IMO the Jazz front office has learned these priorities on draft night-

1.Character- I believe the Jazz are more worried about the character and work ethic of prospect than other teams. It seems to be completely necessary for successful Jazz player for them to fit into the culture of Salt Lake City and to have the work ethic necessary to improve.

2. Size-After being stonewalled by the Lakers' size several years in a row the Jazz have learned they need more length on the court to compete.

3. Athletic ability

4. BB Skill level

Take a look at our most recent picks. Jeremy Evans, Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors all have A+ rating for their character and work ethic. All of them have excellent athletic ability and length for their positions. All of them are still developing NBA-level skills.

What does this mean for the prospects this year?

Of the top rated PG's Kemba, Jimmer, Knight and Irving all have excellent intangibles. However only Knight has great size for his position. So I think the Jazz will value Knight more highly than other teams.

We can discuss the other players in more depth once we have their offical measurements.

Agreed and great post! I think that is why they take Knight aswell. What happens when Walker breaks an ankle and then loses his speed? Knight will be looking that much better!

I would put BB skill over athletic ability. We did draft Gordon Hayward over guys like Paul George and Luke Babbit last year.

Utah Jazz Archtype:

1. Delicate
2. ability to grow like Morning Glory
3 won't get Broken
4. tall like a Pine Tree
5. Surprise

A typical 1st round Jazz pick by KOC/Sloan:

1-Fills positional need
2-The most polished offensive player available

The only exception to this rule was Ronnie Brewer, but he was the BPA by default, though he did fill the positional need.

You can argue over the rankings, but I thnk Qman is spot on. We've heard KOC speak about the first three qualities on the list over the past year+. And Corbin spoke about character in an artcicle published in the DNews today. Kevin tipped his hand well before the draft last year saying if you could create a mismatch at a position, you have to consider taking that player (e.g. Hayward as a SG).

I think the Jazz board might be Irving, Williams, Knight. The knee issue and lack of college experience may be too great a risk to take with Kanter. At #12 I like either Singleton or Thompson. Both are big for their position. Jazz could use a shooter and that favors Thompson, but Singleton could easily develop into a starter and elite defender. Draft Thompson and he either comes off the bench or Hayward moves back to SF and you lose the size advantage he provides at SG.

IMO Singleton is the pick at 12, if his character passes the interviews without problems. I don't think Klay Thompson has enough athletic ability/defensive ability to fit the mold.

1. Player must be white as snow
2. Player must have the ability to get booed on draft day
3. Player must have the ability to have KOC say "He is what he is, you know"
4. Locke must get excited about him
5. Boler must call him "The young rookie"

3 through 5 will have no matter what. 2 could happen.

And it could happen TWICE.

1. Draft Knight and the Enes fans go Brokeback on KOC.
2. Draft anyone else at #12 - if Jimmer is still available - and the Mormons will want to know "what in the sam hill is going on."
