Utah Jazz roster 2023-2024

So our roster is?

PG - THT / Sexton / George
SG - Clarkson / Agbaji / Sensabaugh
SF - Lauri / Samic / Simmone
PF - Collins / Hendricks
C - Kessler / Kelley
Is Yurt7 gone? Dunn is definitely on the roster.

Hi all the Utah Jazz followers. The new season is just starting and i am just thinking what are your thoughs about the Utah Jazz´s current player roster in 2023-2024? Here are my thoughs:

Starters (5):
Clarkson - I am fine with Clarkson. I think that his contract is ok for Jazz now and he brings the needed shooting and the offensive creation capabilities for the Jazz. Probably will not be around anymore when the "current main roster" peaks and so i think that he will be therefore traded in the future for new strategic assets.
THT - Still little question mark as the starting point guard, needs to still improve his outside shooting and playmaking skills/capabilities. I like him though, he is still young and is like human wrecking ball when playing aginst smaller opponents at the point guard position.
Lauri - A good and effective team player, who seems to be like being in Utah. A good piece to build around.
Collins - Still a little question mark, mainly because of that hand situation. But it seems to be mostly ok now and i think that he will have a quite steady and good season. Brings a much needed athleticsm to Utah Jazz´s front court rotations. Probably a good piece to have around and has a lot of potential to be a valuable part of the team´s future front court rotations, especially at a "power forward" spot.
W. Kessler - A good defensive player and starting center, who just needs to improve his shooting touch, especially from the free throw line. A good piece to build around.

Main bench (10):
Sexton - A potentially very good 6 man type player, which has some potential to even be a starter is some team rotations. A good piece to have around or to use as a strategic asset when trading for some star type player in the distant future.
Ochie - A kinda steady performer, a 3 & D-player, who brings some needed athleticsm to Jazz´s back and front court rotations. Probably should improve his ball handling and passing capabilities. A good piece to have around.
Dunn - A very good backup Point guard, a defensive specialist who is avery steady performer in these days. Might even fight for starting job, especially if he can keep up the current shooting touch from 3pt line. A very good and potentially even cheap piece to have around.
Olynyk - A good passer and steady team player. Probably should play as a backup player in better teams. A good piece to have around now. but will probably be used as a tradepiece in future trade considerations.
George - Looks as a very good point guard/combo guard prospect to Utah jazz future backcourt rotations. I like his attitude and offensive capabilities - especially the shooting touch. A good future piece to build around.
Hendricks - A athletics big man with some shooting capability. Runs floor well for his size. Seems to have some rookie struggles now, but seems to be improving. Should probably see some time in G-league to play more minutes in the bigger role. A good future piece to have around.
Fontecchio - Fontechhio is a ok player, who probably could shoot the ball a lot better than we have seen in a jazz uniform so far. Probably just needs just a more time and a bigger role to show his skills, but i doubt that it would happen in Jazz´s uniform, mainly because of his older age. Would probably be a great player in the Euroleague though.
Samanic - Samanic is a ok player, which can be used in many front court rotations when the extra body is needed. Not really a big strategic piece to have or build around.
Yurtesevic - A good and steady backup center, who probably should be keeped around, especially if the price is right.
Sensebaugh - Have some promise as a offensive player, not sure about his current role in the team now. Needs to play in G-league first to get a shape and collect some much needed experience.

Other bench level players (Rest of players in the roster):
Some ok players (mainly Potter, Juzang) , who could have a place in the roster, especially if a extra body is needed because of teams´ situational needs, like in the case the team is dealing with some players´ health problems.

Coach:
W. Hardy. - I like him a lot, seems to be a good coach. Very young, so he is still learning the ropes, but its looking good. A good piece to build around.

In the team level I think that Utah jazz will again supprise the people and will win more games in season 2023-2024 than in the previous season 2022-2023. I estimate that the team will win probably about 44-46 games this year, mainly because the team has a very deep roster and therefore can play hard through a whole regular season. In playoff time the current roster will probably lost in the first round against the teams with more A-class players/superstars.

Waiting for your thoughs and views about the current Utah Jazz 2023-2024 roster :)
Yours: Jazzfann
Hi again all Jazz fans and followers. It is still early, just 9 games played so far (2-7) in this season, but here is my current views about Jazz' s roster and Jazz's players current performances so far:

Clarkson: He has started a season wildly inconsistent, some very bad games, some "ok" games and maybe just a one good game. Anyway i think that he will eventually be ok when season goes on. I think that he is ok piece to have around until a possible good trade comes along in future.
THT: Another player whose has been a wildly inconsistent so far. There have been some good moments, which has followed by too much not so good wild moments - and a lot of bad shots and silly turnovers.
Anyway he is still fairly young, so there is room for some improvement, but despite this I think he should probably come from bench until he learns to play more consistent as a pg. He could be also traded for a better more fitting piece if a good enough deal comes around.
Lauri: Lauri is looking very good so far. The 3-point shot has improved and he has been also very steady and good performer in all other aspects too.
Collins: He has been a steady performer in a frontcourt so far too. Good rebounder, who brings some needed athleticism to the Jazz's frontcourt. Just needs to still improve his defense, especially on the one to one situations.
W.Kessler: Kessler has been struggling a little in this season so far. But it seems that a biggest reason of his problems might be that he has been playing injured after that injury he got at the Sacramento game. So that is why I am not so much worried about his situation and I think he would be just fine when season goes on.

Sexton: So far he has been wildly inconsistent with a bad tunnel vision. He has played a lot worse than i anticipated. Needs to play a lot of smarter to earn more playing time in future. Seems to be at his best as a 6th man scoring role from the bench. Probably should be used at strategic trade asset when trading for a better fitting roster piece in future.
Ochie: Played mostly ok so far in this season. Need to still improve his 3-point shooting though. A good piece to have around.
Dunn: Have been a more inconsistent in the season than I anticipated. Maybe he have just been trying little too much and need just to look to pass more and dribble less. And shoot those open 3-pointers too. But i think that he will get his game right when season goes on. It seems now that his best role in a team is a backup player at pg-position.
Olynyk: I think that he have been also a little inconsistent in this season. Probably it is just because he has been little confused about his new role as coming from bench. I think that he is still a very valuable player in Jazz roster because of his play making capabilities. Just needs to shoot more 3 pointers in a game, especially those open ones.
George: Looking good so far. He has maybe looked a most steady player in a back-court at the pg-position in this season so far. I like his play making capabilities and especially his shooting touch. It would probably be best for him to come still from a bench as a backup, but because of the team's current pg-situation woes he will probably start at least in some games.
Hendricks: Looking ok now as a future wing player with 3-point shot. Still a very raw player, which has looked a little confused in a court so far in his limited role and time. Getting a much needed playing time and experience in g-league now.
Fontechio: Offensively i think that he has been playing mainly ok in this season so far and it seems that his 3pt-shot has started falling too. Defensively he is still struggling a bit, even though he seems to be trying his best. I think that he is ok backup from the bench.
Yurtesevic: Seems ok in limited time and role. Probably should get more time now, when Kessler is on the injured list. I would like to see him having a more playing time now, even starting in some games, at least in those games where opposition has low-post threats. Another plus is that then Lauri would have more energy and stamina left used in later at games (and in the season too), because then he would not need to play so much at center position, especially at defense.

Other players: No comments on this subject this time, mainly because of other players have had so few playing time in a season so far.

On team point of view: I think that the front court play has been mainly ok so far, though there is still a lot room for improvement. Especially Lauri has been very good. Backcourt play has been mostly a wild mess in this season so far, especially at playmaking level. Hope that giving George more playing time and even some starts helps. Also i am counting that Clarkson and Dunn improves their game too. Probably Jazz needs to move THT to a bench role and use Sexton mostly at limited role as a scorer from a bench until he figures how to play more consistent team basketball.

I still think that Utah Jazz will play better when season progress on and that their wide bench will give them strategic advantages when season goes on - Especially later in a season when all teams starts having stamina and health problems. That to be said I think that Jazz back-court play needs to improved a lot until the team will be competitive at a playoff level. That is why I will have to reevaluate my earlier estimation about team's wins at the 2023/2024 season. Based on my current view of the team performance and capabilities I will now estimate that Jazz will win about 35-38 games this season.

Waiting of yours opinions and views :)

I thank for your views and applaud your optimism but I'm afraid that the 35-38 win estimation is not realistic, unless we either get big trades or see some massive Keyonte George glow up. And its not really our offense, but our defense thats gonna undo this year.

Our defense was bad last year with Kessler at great form, and now he has been injured/struggling. We just dont have enough NBA level defenders and our opponents keep scoring 110+ on us even on bad shooting nights. We have a bunch of medium quality offensive firecrackers + one legit All-star (who can play defense), but thats just not enough to even be competitive against most teams.

Also offensively it is very telling that we have 6 guards on the roster, and still the rookie wins the starting job before game 10. So even on our stronger side of the game, the guard issue is real.

Thanks for your post. Since you posted at about 3 AM I'm guessing you're a Jazz fan from Europe?

I didn't think he looked very good in pre-season, but I've actually been rather impressed by Simone. He hustles really well, getting quite a few highly contested offensive rebounds, and he looks pretty confident in his shot.

Yes I am. And I have been following NBA a quite long time. As a Finn I have also followed Lauri's career some years starting from his games at Finnish junior and senior national teams. He was really a star player In Finland in his junior and senior teams. In NBA-level Chicago was kinda mess, the coaching was quite bad (especially Boylen) and it seems also that the player development was also just subpart there (many players has playing a lot better after leaving Chicago). Cleveland was a positive experience, but i think it is just here in Utah that Lauri has really blossomed to the player, which we Finns have seen him to be Finnish national teams (and kinda waiting to be at NBA level too). This season so far i have been most impressed about his development as more consistent 3-pt shooter. His form and release seems to be improved, which makes him harder to defend overall. Also his playmaking and passing seems to be improving too. So it is looking good so far.

In a team level i hope that Jazz will find another star level player and builds a team that plays unselfish team offense and defense. I know that in NBA many teams play a more star driven offense, but i think that there is still room to play more team oriented offense even in NBA-level. When talking about Lauri's career as a Jazz player I have a feeling that he likes to be there in Utah, especially because he seems to be very family oriented man with a wife and young kid. So i am kinda looking forward to see him playing in Utah at least next 4-6 years (after a new contract next summer), if nothing suprising will not happen.

I suspect Dunn is going to start with Clarkson at the 1 and 2, with Sexton and THT coming off the bench together (hence why Hardy has been playing them together in the preseason).

Our #9 pick aint looking great, and our #16 pick has come back to earth. I think Ochai will have an improved season, and I think Collins will be good.

If Dunn can be a competent PG that puts other players in the right spots on offence, we are comfortably a play-in team.

- George
Interesting development from this season has been Dunn's DNPs and the rise of Keyonte George. With Dunn playing a good game last night it'll be interesting to see if he goes back to the bench once Clarkson returns, or not
