Utah Legislature to Audit U of U Athletics, In Light of BYU Rivalry Suspension

No one is forcing the utes to play byu next year and have their players subjected to a barrage of haymakers from byu players. Dont worry, the ute players and coaches will still be safe next year.

Sounds like what is happening is that an organization that makes tons of money from taxpayers is getting audited. Strange stuff indeed.

"Legislature will audit University of Utah athletics in wake of BYU rivalry suspension"

The title makes it sound like this is because of the rivalry suspension. Then, if you read the article, you find it has nothing to do with that. At least there is nothing in the article pointing to it having anything to do with the byu/utah rivalry

Just a red herring by someone at the SL Trib to get more responses

Won't someone please think of the (Utah) children???

Their safety is at risk!

Someone please ensure that none of the Ute players are ever touched or bumped! Poor things

Having said that, has our legislature fixed our worst in the nation air quality?
Have they lifted us out of the dead last in per pupil funding for public education? Our largest classroom sizes are going to get even larger with the largest teacher shortage in recent history coming about! Apparently our legislature thinks that people should be jumping at the chance for a $30k job and endless abuse from entitled parents and idiotic legislators.
Have they passed medical marijuana yet?
How about Medicaid Expansion so that 100,000 Utahns will finally have health care?
Have they explained yet how we're supposed to fund Greg Hughes' shiny new prison? Or is the "money tree" gonna pay for that too along with the $2 billion dollar Lake Powell Pipeline?

If not, then why are we wasting time investigating who the Utes? Screw sports. Our legislature should get work done before they waste time on this nonsense.

That legislators are influenced by their religion and by having BYU add an alma mater I don't doubt. That the LDS church is directly influencing to pass legislation like this? I doubt it. Where's the evidence?

I don't think that the LDS church is directly influencing this either. I haven't seen any press releases like I've seen regarding issues such as medical marijuana or anti-hate crime laws.

I also don't think that our legislature should be wasting time on this. Not as long as our air quality and public education issues remain unresolved.

I think most of them would be very upfront in stating that their church is more important to them than their job or their government. These legislators are simply showing themselves to be exactly who they claimed to be when elected, but some of us don't like it.

This has most definitely been my experience, I've had coworkers tell me straight up that this is the case. While I don't have issue with the LDS doctrine guiding their decisions, blindly following the LDS Church's commands as a PUBLIC EMPLOYEE is concerning.

And sad that our legislators so entirely lack professionalism and dignity that they allow their faith and connection to the LDS church and its private university to have this effect on their legislative actions.
This is the heart of the complaints about the Church in politics. So many people choose to simply be sheep and follow along blindly. I'm an active, temple recommend holding Mormon who has plenty of different opinions than the church and "its" legislators.

Has the LDS church been mainly silent in legislation in the past? All I know of is the California Legislation 8 push, or whatever that one was.

The rest of the control, IMO, seems to come from lay doctrine believing voters using the democratic system to vote into office. As our system is meant to be.

Wow.

Yes, we all know the LDS Church can wield the power of our State Legislature. But spending political capital on this? So much for keeping the powder dry. In fact, just goes to show how easy and thoughtless their influence is wielded. Things more important than BYU, because we know that this is what it's all about:

1. Box Elder/Weber/Davis/SL/Summit/Wasatch/Utah County air quality
2. Weber/SLCo Homelessness
4. Medicaid Expansion/Solution
5. Affordable Housing
6. Redevelopment and Infrastructure

They're addressing some of these, but with none of the expedience of addressing the Utah/BYU rivalry.

Funny.

There is a huge push both money wise and regulatory on The Hill for air quality improvements. I obviously cannot express my thoughts much further on the matter.

I didn't mean that the church never issued political statements. They have, and do, on issues that they see as having a moral component...most recently as someone pointed out earlier in the thread about immigration and marijuana legalization. But to put pressure on Utah's sports department? I doubt it.

I wasn't questioning you, C. Just a genuine question and commentary on what I have no clue about.
