Utah mentioned as a possible destination for Pierce

Only way Jazz would want Pierce is if it guarantees a championship this year.
It would have to be a 100% certainty for Jazz.
Pierce days are numbered.
This may be his last year.
There is no way Pierce is the piece that get's Jazz a championship this year.
No way Jazz do this trade.

If the Jazz could land Rondo by taking on Pierce's contract they may do it. I'm not a huge fan on Rondo but if you can get him without giving up any of the young 4 they may consider it. FWIW I don't think it is possible for the Jazz to do this. But you never know if Boston gets desperate enough to make a move.

Doesn't Rondo have an outrageous contract like Pierce?
Pierce is 15 mil.
Isn't Rondo's about the same?
Jazz would have to trade everyone for both.

Rondo makes 11M this year and 25M more after this year. That is 27M for both Pierce and Rondo.

Al Jefferson 15M
Mo Williams 8.5M
Marvin Williams 8.3M
Raja Bell 3.4M
Watson 2M
Millsap 7.2M
Evans 1.8M

Not too difficult to get there using those pieces. Any or all of those pieces are expendable for Utah.

For example Use Al 15M
Marvin 8.3M
Bell 3.4M

And the salaries match. That's not enough for Boston though. But you could work something out if they are desperate and it only takes 3-4 players to get there.

Rondo makes 11 mil this year, 12 next and 13 the year after that. The difference is that Rondo wil turn 27 next month and has one more big contract worth of play. You could make the arguement that Rondo is under paid.

Celts are for sure going to want 1,2 or more of Jazz 4 young prospects.
They want to reload for next ten years.
They won't want Jazz trash.

They want to be in the market to go after free agents. They may want those young prospect but they are not getting any if we have to take on Pierce's bad contract. It would be enough that we are taking almost 30M off of their books for this off season and that they could use that money to go after FA's. The Celtics like the Lakers are not fond of building through the draft and waiting. They prefer to build through trades and FA deals.

Next year is a big dud for FAs.
Who's out there Celts would want.
Don't know. But I do believe that the Celtics could have interest in either Millsap or Jefferson. By trading with us they gain the ability to keep one of them around. If they still have Pierce on the books this off season they may not. They could also be interested in Dwight. I have not looked at the FA market but there is always somebody out there.

Pierce and Brandon Bass for Marvin Williams and Jefferson.

Pierce at this stage in his career is still probably better than any SF Utah has ever had. Even better than Chris Morris and David Benoit.
Bass is an insurance policy against Millsap leaving via free agency or makes Millsap more tradeable.

Jefferson allows Garnett to move back to PF and play less minutes in preparation for the playoffs. Al's expiring contract gives Celtics flexibility for next season. Marvin fills the SF spot vacated by Pierce's departure.

Just seems way too risky for Jazz to go after Rondo and Pierce.
Jazz have their payroll set up to make better moves than this.
Jazz would also have to move Mo Williams.
He won't take a back seat to Rondo.

They lose very little flexibility by doing this. Pierce is gone by the time renewing any young guys is an issue and Rondo's contract is not that bad. Jazz have a grand total of 25M committed for next year. Taking on these contracts still puts them below the Tax limit and has them a grand total of 13 Million commited for the following season. Only Rondo would be under contract past next season.
.
This is the reason you want flexibility. So you can get a player you want by taking on a bad contract. I'm not sure they should go after Rondo. But they do need a PG for the future and Rondo may be a good fit here.
