Utah-v-BYU

Surprised there isn’t already a thread considering the Twitter and media rhetoric that’s being slung on both sides.

Does BYU finally break through in the season opener? Why/Why not?

I like BYU. Home dog. Is that UofU RB I love gonna even ply or is he still rehabbing? Who’s the qb for the U?

He is gonna play.
The QB is Tyler Huntley. Good, experienced QB

Biggest issues for the U are offensive line and their stud wr (covey) might not be ready (from what I have heard). Also a new OC but I don't think that will be a huge issue.

Also kicker is an issue

Shaky OL on the road. Give me the home team. How is BYU this year?
Offense should be really good. Great O-line, deep talented running backs, stud QB (though he is still trying to get to %100 after shoulder surgery), retuning all their wide receivers (though to be honest, they mostly have sucked), amazing tight ends (one of them is one of the best in the country).
Year two under their OC should help as well.

Kicking game should be better than it has been in years.

Defense has some question marks. 3 or 4 guys from the secondary that were supposed to be in the 2 deep are gone. Linebackers are good but thin. Interior of the d line should be great but not sure they have any good edge rushers.

Back to Utah. They are the favorites to win the pac12. Their d line might be their best ever (that's saying something) and I have heard they might have the best d line in the country.

I think Utah having Ludwig pushes them over the top for a couple reasons. First of all, even though Detmer didn’t have great success at BYU, I think he’s a big reason BYU damn near beat Utah during Sitake’s first year. There just wasn’t any film that would help Utah key in on BYU’s offense. Sure, there’s a lot more film to look at on Ludwig but BYU will have zero film to look at in regards to Utah’s current offensive personnel and how Ludwig plans to utilize his playmakers. My 2nd reason is the fact that if Taylor was still Utah’s OC, I’m almost certain BYU wins the game with 2 years of game film on an OC that wasn’t exactly super innovative or good with halftime adjustments.

As always, I think it’ll be a dogfight but I think Utah prevails for a few reasons on top of Ludwig:

- Utah’s O-line isn’t as big of a concern as people are playing it up to be. A few of the new starters had quality reps last season and aren’t exactly green.

- While having Covey 100% healthy is absolutely crucial over the course of the season, Utah has plenty of playmakers at WR. They can win the game without Covey playing a huge role.

- I hear a lot of BYU fans say how they would have easily held on to beat Utah last year if they weren’t so banged up. I guess they’re forgetting Utah played the game without their starting QB or RB. I also think people forget just how good Utah looks when playing with a healthy Huntley.

While I do think the streak will end before Zach Wilson leaves BYU, it won’t be this year. I think for 3 qtrs it’s a back and forth slugfest and Utah tacks on 10 late points.

Utah- 27
BYU- 17

I don't think byu didn't hang on to beat Utah last year cause they were banged up (though they were using their 6th string, linebacker converted to rb, running back so banged up is putting it lightly) I think they didn't hang on because they started playing prevent defense and prevent offense.

As for why byu almost beat Utah with detmer that is because of taysom Hill and Jamaal Williams imo not because of detmer or any lack of film or whatever. Detmers offense sucked. Luckily he had two of the best offensive players ever to play at byu. And the offense still sucked

I would agree that Taysom and Jamaal were the biggest factors, but I think even a crappy OC is dangerous when you have zero idea what tendencies come out of what formations, etc. We’ll have to agree to disagree but I think Utah only having 1 game of college film on Detmer helped keep the game closer than it might have been.

They actually have a lot of talent. IMO, they're stacked at QB and their offense she be fun to watch.

One of their QBs is a supposed super athlete and he grew up in one of the Mormon Colonies in Mexico called Colonia Juarez in Chihuahua. The kid is a Romney descendant and reminds me of Brendan Fraser from the Scout. Haha
