Utah-v-BYU

E
That would shocking asf if he left the NFL for BYU

I wanna say there was a rumor years ago...after he left the Eagles...but I’m sure it was just that. College recruiting is intense and an animal aid guess he has no interest in.

Everybody is going to call me NUTS but I’m actually happy with where Utah’s passing game is headed. My reasoning: I really can’t understand BYU’s Defensive game plan. They dropped 8 in coverage almost every play (basically playing prevent Defense all game) against a team with Zach Moss. My only thought that seems logical is that, like many, BYU underestimated the quality of Utah’s O-Line this year and felt like they could stop Moss without stuffing the box, and fluster Huntley and the pass game by dropping everybody into coverage. We obviously know that they were unable to stop Moss, but it did have an effect on Utah getting deep. That being said, I’m extremely pleased that Huntley stayed patient all game, took what the Defense was giving, and was extremely accurate when he did make a throw. It shows me that the kid has some discipline in Ludwig’s Offense and is willing to play within the flow of the game- something you’d expect from a Senior QB.

As has been mentioned, Huntley still went 13 for 16 with 2 drops- one of which coming from a wide open TE that was easily going to be a 40+ yard gain.

I really think BYU’s Defense is a Top 30 (maybe higher) unit and the fact that Utah could force the issue with the run game is extremely encouraging to me. Fact of the matter is, Utah probably won’t see any other teams dropping 8 into coverage all game long for the rest of the season. In fact, a lot of the teams on Utah’s schedule are gonna have to stick that extra guy in the box if they have any hope of stopping Moss. If Huntley can’t move the ball through the air in those situations, I’ll start to worry, but don’t see the reason to yet. Before Huntley’s injury last season, Utah had their best passing offense since joining the PAC 12. I think Ludwig is an upgrade at OC and as long as Huntley stays healthy, Utah will be fine.

The kicking game however, does scare the hell outta me and I have a haunting feeling that it’s gonna cost us eventually...

A healthy Huntley in this system will be scary good, imo. I agree about not seeing other teams play the same style D that BYU did which will make Huntley that much more of a threat. Could be a magical season at the U.

BYU has a really nice Defensive line. The more I think about it, I can understand BYU’s philosophy of thinking they could stop Moss straight-up and take away the passing game. Their big-time failure was making zero attempts at adjustments at half time.

Again, I think it bodes well for the quality of Utah’s O-Line. I’m not surprised after 1 week that BYU fans are claiming Utah’s passing offense will be their doom and nervous Ute fans are questioning Ludwig.

While I think Utah will be ok passing the ball, I do think that they are gonna start off every single game trying to pound the rock. I think it’ll be rare to see Huntley pass the ball 30 times in a game and that he’ll average closer to 20-25.

I was surprised to see there is still one person on the planet willing to bet in favor of BYU when they play the Utes.

Even the Mormon church puts their money on Utah at this point.

There was actually way more than one.
In Vegas the line opened with Utah favored by 7. They moved it down to 5 because they were getting too many people betting byu and they wanted to even out the action a bit.

And then there's this:

And byu has been favored 4 times during this streak.

I think the civility in this thread was refreshing.

I understand trying to stop Moss straight up in the 1st half as it was working ok. As soon as Moss broke a few and clearly was not going down on first contact, that's where you change plans and involve the LB's... but that did not happen. If you say you're game plan is to stop the run and not allow Moss to beat you, but you drop 8 all game, makes me wonder if you know football or if you are just giving out bad info thinking it will trick the Utes.

I don't really have confidence that BYU coaches or players are good at in game changes or decisions.

The Utes played well enough to win and to force BYU into some poor decisions and mistakes. They have some nice athleticism and talent, even if they aren't really that deep in some areas.

This could be a good year, but it could also fall short of the opportunity to take the South. If they fall short it's most likely due to injuries and depth.

I don't really have a solution for BYU to improvement. The reality is that unless they get into a P5, they are just going to fall off more and more due to recruiting and talent. There's not much even good coaches can do to overcome that. With lack of depth and talent you end up having to scheme and get fancy which limits the exposure to your weaknesses but also limits how good you can be. I don't know of any better options beyond Sitake. He is a good coach, and I don't know how much of this is on him, how much is just on the situation, and how much is just the unique difficulties that BYU has as a school.

Either way there was a fork in the road and the Utes are on one path while BYU is on another. College Football is fickle, and BYU could easily catch up and get back in this, but they could easily not as well.

I’m convinced Tuiaki needs to go. I don’t think the dude has ever made an in-game adjustment.
