Yeah I sent that as I logged out of my work PC prolly should have re-read or not sent it, but if you an get past the rambling my point still stands. You can't judge this years talent (or lack their of) on previous teams, other then coaches and maybe a couple of red shirt or return missionaries there is no connection to those teams.

Let me see if this will make sense to you since you I know it is something you Rockets....errr excuse me Y fans like to bring up. The Y football team has been a disappointment and bringing down not only their but every other WAC, MWC and now independence teams since 1984 because of how poorly they've played since then.
 
Now to get back on topic, definitely good to get the win and the O-Line and White IV looked good in the first half, I was pretty upset with the ULTRA conservative play calling in the 2nd half. The offense still isn't that good so I didn't expect them to keep up the pace but there is a difference in the offense not performing and the coaches not performing and I think the 2nd half was more due to the coaches/play calling not even giving the offense a chance to perform.
I understand wanting to protect a lead and the previous mistakes by the offense but you can't go to that extreme conservatism and even then there was still a TO (fumble by White IV) because as I've said Ad Nauseam, the players will play how you coach. Coach scared they'll play scared, coach conservative they'll play conservative and worse coach not to lose the players will have "lose" in the heads and that's what they'll do majority of the time.
 
IMO that was probably the best coordinating job out of Sitake since he took over the defense. Oregon St is not a good team, but their offensive numbers are actually pretty good and they rank pretty high offensively in the Pac 12. I saw alot more blitzing, especially blitzing at the right times, as well as alot of secondary people being mixed up into those blitzes. It was certainly the most aggressive I've seen a Sitake defense.

As for the rest of the season, it still boils down to offense. If we see more of the offense that Utah played in the first half, they can beat anybody remaining on their schedule. However, that 2nd half showing was horrible and if we see that again, Utah can also lose to anybody left on their schedule.

@ Arizona this weekend is probably the toughest game Utah has left. It will be interesting to see if Utah's offensive coaches and John Hays will continue to take baby-steps forward, or regress into another outing that resembles the Cal game.
 
A lot of the people sitting in my area at that game were blasting Norm Chow (and rightfully so). I'm starting to wonder if he will be the one calling the plays next season.

I publicly laughed at this hiring on the board and was ridiculed for it.

Chow had been God awful in the pros (Tennessee) and even worse at UCLA. Everyone was hanging on to his USC days which were about six years prior and during which he was the recipient of the best talent in the country. He'd shown nothing in years and wasn't getting even close to that same talent at Utahr. Laughable that this hiring was lauded so much so.

Well it's starting to look like you called that one. Granted he has a lot of injuries, but his play calling has been brutal. Take a shot or 2 down field at the start of the game, run up the middle 90% of the time thereafter.

I'm pretty sure Chow was brought in mainly for his recruiting ties in the Pac 12 footprint. Hopefully that's all he does next year if he can't get his play calling in order.

No actually, he does seem to be improving; whether that's the case because of comp level or what and it's just more false hope for BYU football, it's a least a little better than the first few games.

I know what you mean. Utah scored 27 points on Saturday. But it was against Oregon State's crappy D, and they only had 62 yards passing (is that a record low for a win?). Just brutal. I don't care how bad the QB is, I guarantee anyone on this board could get at least 63 yards passing with the receivers the Utes have.

Where are the screen passes, check downs, quick outs, etc? The Utes have no short passes at all. They throw one down the field every once in a while, and run up the middle. I think they had one pitch to the outside (White fumbled it) and a couple short passes. Everything else was basic run up the middle, or (and there weren't many of these) long pass attempts.

Utah has like 4 or 5 plays on offense right now. Just brutal.
 
I think 99% of the reason Chow was brought in was because of his Pac 12 recruiting ties and for that reason, I still think the hire should be lauded. 4 star QB Travis Wilson out of SoCal has already verbaled to Utah and Chow, along with the move to the Pac12 can be credited as the direct reasons. Utah really hasn't gotten QB commits like that in the past. Now, we'll have to wait until signing day to sing Chow's praises and he's also going to have to add more talent than just Wilson, but I'm willing to lay off Norm until then.

Utah also went to an entirely different offensive system without having all of the talent necessary to pull it off IMO. It is a system that suited Wynn better, and now with Jordan gone, we can certainly see that he was doing "ok" at running the offense. You're really not going to have any success what so ever in that offense without a 6-4 QB with an NFL arm, O-lineman who can win at the point of attack and a stable of RB's who can pound the rock.

Whether Chow can help to the point in which Utah has all of that is going to determine whether the hire was a success or not.
