Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Actually, you're wrong and I was right (I know, it's hard to believe).

Last year the Rose Bowl was required to take a non AQ (assuming one qualified for a BCS) because they had never taken one. TCU is the only non AQ to have ever played in the Rose Bowl (despite many Pac 12 teams playing in the national championship in years past). They are not required to do that anymore, and nobody expects them to.

See this ESPN prediction that doesn't even have a Pac 12 team in the championship game but still has 2 Pac 12 teams in BCS games (including the Rose Bowl):
https://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls/projections

And see this CBS prediction that does have a Pac 12 team in the championship and has another Pac 12 team in the Rose Bowl:
https://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/bowls/predictions

The Rose Bowl was forced to take a non AQ once, because they knew there was no way the Rose Bowl would ever take a non AQ unless they were forced. They are no longer under that obligation and my point was correct (as the predictions clearly show).
Interesting. I guess we're both technically right, since they were forced to do it last year. I wonder, is it on a rotational basis? Or was it only a one time thing?

It was a one time thing. They just did it because the Rose Bowl was the only BCS bowl that had never had a non AQ. The Rose Bowl is free to go back to ignoring non AQ schools the way they normally do.
With TCU, Boise, and even Air Force joining a BCS conference, I think it will be a long time before another non AQ qualifies for a BCS game.

Salty, how will you spin it if Utah loses to UA this weekend? I mean, you made it sound like Utah's remaining schedule was a joke and yet they're dogs to the Wildcats. If the Utes do lose, how will you possibly be able to control the landslide of laughter and finger pointing that will emanate here?

No doubt I put myself out there. I'm not too worried about it though. Utah should beat one dimensional teams like Arizona.

And if they don't? Will the emphasis by you on injuries simply be greater?
How I react to a hypothetical loss depends on the circumstances of the hypothetical loss.

If Utah is winning but gets called for a bunch of phantom penalties in the last 2 minutes that lead to an Arizona game winning score, then I'm likely to think the the phantom penalties played a big role in the loss.

If Hays throws 5 ugly interceptions in a loss, I'm likely to think Wynn being hurt was a big factor.

None of this is relevant though because Utah is going to win. Utah's defense should be able to handle Arizona's 1 dimensional offense. And Arizona's poor defense won't be able to totally expose Utah's poor offense the way other teams have.

Wait... I thought we were talking about Utah blowing chunks.

Yet they have still beat better teams than BYU has. Hell 3 of Utah's wins would qualify for BYU's best win of the season. 1 of them "Oregon State" is BYU's best win of the season.

So if Utah "blows chunks" what does BYU do eat those chunks?

Their record verifies it.
Their tough schedule combined with all the injuries and the record is not so bad.

Utah does have a road win against a BCS team that will finish with a winning record. It's been a while since BYU did that, right?

54-10, lol.

As long as the Utah team that played Cal doesn't show up, they should be okay. Salty has every right to be optimistic about this one. Foles is a really good QB, but that's about all Arizona has going for them. Their run game is not good. If you can contain their passing game, you are in pretty good shape.

In my opinion, this is no lock. Utah has to show up. Particularly their secondary.
