Utes 2011 Football Discussion

This is good news. IMO, the secondary has always been the weak link in Utah's defense.
I heard a stat earlier this season that disagrees. I can't remember exactly what it was, but it was something like (and this is probably it but I can't be absolutely certain) Utah is the only team in college football to have a defensive back taken in the last 4 NFL drafts.

DB has been pretty good for Utah the last few years. Sean Smith, Robert Johnson, Eric Weddle, Brandon Burton. All recent players in Utah's secondary fairly recently. Probably more I'm forgetting as well.

I do sometimes wish the CB's would not play so far off of the ball. But that's coaching not players.

That random stat doesn't disagree with my statement. But apparently some of you are having trouble with your reading comprehension. I said the secondary was the "weak link", not that they were weak in general. Big difference. You can have a few individual studs in the secondary all the time and it can still be the weakest part of the defense. No matter the strength of the chain, or of each link, one of them has to be the weakest.

If you disagree, fine. I'm perfectly okay with that. But I am not going to pursue an argument about it.

The weakest unit on defense, buy far, was the linebackers. They are small, slow, have no pass coverage abilities and didn't make plays on their own. Could you imagine a Manti Teo, Burflict, etc playing behind Utah's DL? They would have 20 tackles a game. The fact that Walker had so many tackles is proof how great this DL is.

Completely agreed.

So then you think Whitt tried to move a Safety to Linebacker this season because the linebackers were so much better than the defensive backs?

It's not a reading comprehension issue, it's just flat out disagreeing with what you said.

I agree that the LB's have been the weak link for the defense in most years I can remember, of course there is exceptions but this year and most years it is the LB's IMO.

Also without cheating and looking it up two more RJ Stanford an Brice McCain are two more DB's I can think of more but they played under coach Mac

The one year we had stars at LB. We beat Alabama in the sugarbowl. LB does seem to be the most difficult position for the Utes to get.

Well really we had a stars at each position that year. LB - Sylvester, CB- Smith, DE - Kruger, DT - Misi, S - Johnson. Man that defense was talented.

I hope Blechen could be that guy at LB. Also looking forward to seeing Keith McGill at safety next year.
