So who’s left we could get at the minimum...

Shaq- I think he gets more but good god if he goes for the min it’s a bargain. Have all 18 of our GMs call email and text him all day until he submits.

Rodney Mcgruder- got waived... has struggled with injuries but kinda that smaller in between wing that could guard some of the faster guys maybe. In Miami he pretended to be a pg for a bit and was great at throwing lob..

Wes Iwundu- he is a person who plays basketball.

GR3 - at the minimum I think he goes somewhere else... likely GS. Who knows.

Jeff Green - it’s a reunion tour bitches!

Oh... how about the most flaccid sign and trade ever... Niang and NWG for Shaq so we can give him 3m or so... send a second... or a first (ain’t like we using them all that well).

Fill out the rest of the roster with undrafted rookies to avoid the hard cap.

This is the kind of out of the box thinking that will someday get me into the stable of GMs we have.

The issue is getting someone who wants to fit into the role we have available at this point. Tony Jones was saying that the Jazz were interested in KDunn but that the role they were offering him wasn’t enough. Someone commented on 12 min a night isn’t much and he laughed and said minus 4 of those.

Point is whoever we get is looking at maybe 8-10 min of playtime which isn’t much. There just aren’t many minutes left after your core 8.

This kind of goes with my whole point. We’re surrendering perimeter D. It doesn’t matter who we sign — there aren’t minutes. The only meaningful perimeter upgrade is if Mike is out of the rotation and his minutes go to a defender. And obviously that’s not happening. So any defensive addition is only an addition on paper. They won’t be on the floor when it counts. Unless it’s over off Redwood Rd.

Or we could look at upgrading Royce, but again they’re not going to do that. That concept is too out-of-the-box.

Yep, agreed. There aren't minutes to be had. There is (was) no one available out there that would be taking minutes from Mitchell, Ingles, Royce, Clarkson, or Bojan. They all serve key roles on what we have going.

It all comes down to Conley. Jazz seem to have decided that there's no one worth getting over Conley (combined with his coming off the books next year). Many of the loudest voices on here disagree. Guess we'll see how it turns out.

If it turns out Conley isn't the fit this year, I think the cleanest possible swap is for Otto Porter. But I understand, given the injury history, why the Jazz aren't inclined to press on that one. Who knows whether the Bulls are interested either. Maybe possibly a bit more so with Patrick Williams? Could be a trade deadline issue again?

Porter - Conley swap would be perfect for us. We could use the BAE on a PG and still be under the tax.

I've always been a Porter guy. Yes, the injury and salary concerns are valid...but they also exist with Conley. Porter is Robert Covington who can actually shoot it well.

I'd say the injury concerns are a good deal more significant with OPJ than Conley.

Maybe, no one can really predict the future here. It is a 27 year old vs a 33 year old.

Either way, I think the potential reward of Porter panning out is much greater than Conley. Even if Conley is available and healthy, I don't love him with Mitchell in the back court and I also don't love that it freezes Joe Ingles out of the game. Porter is a really great complimentary player. There's a reason why he's a +/- god.

could we do a deal with the Porter-Conley and add Harrison?

Let me backup and say that it wouldn’t appear like it’s an obvious upgrade, but really would be. The fact that it wouldn’t appear that way is reason enough that DL doesn’t do it.

But let me give some better context:

For those who have been following this franchise, we really haven’t ever had a really good defensive wing, and it’s distorted our views. Even dating back to the DWill era, some thought Brewer was a defender, but he was pretty bad. I even said Korver was our best wing defender. You could count Matthews, but we had him one year as a rookie. I won’t get in to AK because that’s a huge can of worms. Even with our finals runs our “specialist” was Bryon Russel, whose defense was very overrated. It’s allowed us to create the illusion that guys like Roger Braille were defensive stoppers.

I would then couple this with our franchise’s history of clinging to guys because both sentimentality plus thinking we got value. You know those people who buy something they don’t want or need simply because they perceive they got it at a really good value? That’s kind of how we are. Jarron Collins comes to mind. The fact that Royce is one of DL’s cubic zirconias in the rough makes us value him more because of how much of a value he appears to be. Since we’ve never had really good wing defenders, we get to see the whole body of work on Royce and feel he must fit that. I think if we had a few seasons of footage on Torrey Craig, maybe we’d feel the same way. So even a guy like him or, better, a Shaq Harrison. But I don’t think our collective pride would allow us to believe that we could replace our $10M guy with a minimum signing and be better off.

It doesn’t matter if they interest you. It matters if they interest DL. And DL thinks Shaq has been away from the game too long and is too out of shape, and he’s pretty sure Iwundu died in the prequels.
It’s more likely we get CJ miles back since his number is in the Rolodex... DL was furious that the lakers got Matthews cuz his number was there too... he was shocked at how quickly the Lakers got that signing done.
