What's new

What can't he do?

I have no doubt if Kanter had remained at Washington he would have become eligible. The NCAA are a bunch of thugs who time and time again come across as hypocrites. I hope the Jazz get to draft the kid. I think he is going to be very good eventually.

Kanter's ineligibility came down to, even what the NCAA called a 'technicality.' Specifically, that funds for travel, education, etc, were to be paid directly by the team. Mehmet Kanter (father) kept scrupulous records of every penny received and spent. There was very little 'extra' leftover after the 'acceptable' expenses. That money was held in escrow by a third party. Mehmet Kanter, at the end of the year, even tried to repay the expenses to Fenerbahce. The Turkish club refused to accept the payment (this is all documented). The specific technicality was that the educational expenses (according to NCAA rules) has to be paid by the club directly and not 'passed through' the player or his family (this was a violation).

So, UK, Kanter, Mehmet, all knew and admitted there was a violation, but intended to convince the NCAA that the NCAA guidelines are so exhaustive that an opportunity for ignorance of the rules existed. They cited the Cam Newton case (Cam didn't know what his father was doing), the Dee Bost case (claimed ignorance and was reinstated), among many others (Selby, Sidney, etc).

Emmert had no business scolding UK for recruiting Kanter when his prior school had done EXACTLY the same. Every talking head (Bilas, Vitale, hell ... even other SEC coaches were lobbying for the kid to play college ball as it was obvious to ALL (yes, NCAA admitted to this as well) that the absolute intention of the Kanter family was for Enes to maintain his amateur status and come to the U.S. to play college basketball. There was a reason it took MONTHS of investigation to determine his eligibility. Should he have played? Most think so considering others that played and KNOWINGLY broke the rules (need examples?). That is up for debate, I admit. Point is, it's anything but clear cut.

None of this matters in this draft. None of this matters in his pro career. I guess it only serves to defend Enes Kanter, the University of Kentucky, and John Calipari. For that reason, I'm sure very few souls on this board really cares, lol.

I've got MUCH more detail but I figure that lays a foundation for there's more to it than Kanter and UK being stupid to think he might play.

So basically you are saying Kanter was ineligible, but he should be able to play because other players have seemingly gotten by it? Not good enough argument, I win.

Congrats, two ridiculous statements in a row. C'mon man, seriously, did you flunk reading comprehension? Let's take a damn poll. Ha!
So you know, I got no problem with you, enjoy most of your posts (well kinda), just couldn't let you make a broad sweeping (even if it was really dumb) statement regarding something you certainly have little knowledge of.

some rebuttal. Why was Cam Newton not penalized? Selby, Sidney?

I have no idea. The NCAA is no doubt corrupt. By NCAA rules Kanter is ineligible, and they chose to see out those rules.

Selby and Sidney where both punished for whatever they did.

Cam Newton was already a star when all the allegations arose. The NCAA knew they would lose a ton of money if they suspended him.

THAT, is a good post. And THAT is my point. NCAA hands down very inconsistent and sometimes self-serving rulings. Mark Emmert should have removed himself from the equation entirely ... considering UK had just taken Terrence Jones and Kanter right out from under the his nose (at Wash).

No NBA rookie center comes into the league and dominates on the defensive end. Defense depends on the team scheme and desire. If high schoolers were eligible for the draft, he could have been #1 pick last year. If we do pick him, let's just hope he doesn't turn into Kwame Brown.

Several stellar Cs have come into the league and had an impact defensively from day one: Robinson, Hakeem, Shaq, Ewing, Yao, Mutombo, Bogut... even Favors. Maybe they don't dominate right away, but the impact is felt to be sure.

Kanter isn't as explosive or as long as these other players, but he seems like he play hard. He should be good, not great defensively. He'll be better than Okur and Boozer, and along with Favors, he could be a skilled space eater that could be good enough.

That's a good post Catchall. From what I have seen, I would say Kanter will be an immediate scorer and an immediate HUGE rebounder. SOLID defense as well ... just not of the shot-blocking variety, just knowing how not to give up easy baskets and making it difficult for opposing C's to get close to the basket. He's a hoss and has EXTREMELY (extremely) high bb IQ.

I'm shocked that after watching the sophistication of a number of those moves ANYONE would not be all for Kanter at 3.

Really, I'm all for drafting Kanter. I think Knight will be the better pro, but Kanter is a nice risk. Also I really want Jimmer for some reason.

Me too on the Kanter risk (big man), and I'm becoming more impressed with Fredette. He's been so good for so long that it's old hat, and people start devaluing him "but he can't play defense!" -- he certainly hasn't, but the guy seems pretty determined to silence his critics on that issue. And the other aspects of his game? He was the national player of the year. He's a pretty obvious pick @ 12 (though I'm still researching Biyombo). I think I'm getting off topic.

Let me end on Kanter - he's a big. He's skilled. He's not that much of a risk I don't think. There're enough reasons to draft him 3rd. In fact, I think he's 1st on my board.

I hope Kanter's there at 3 and I hope Fredette doesn't play himself into the top 11. Somehow I think Walker and Knight will go before him, so Fredette should be there at 12.

Walker and Knight will both, most definitely, go before Jimmer. If I'm KOC, I take Kanter and Fredette, in a freakin' heartbeat, and laugh all the way to the bank. (read into that what you may)

draft ether.
