What if Hayward doesn't re-sign?

Still not the point.

My point is simple - trade Hayward this week if he doesn't commit to us. A basic private conversation with the fo would suffice. I'd rather have him than not, but I dont want to lose him for nothing then lose Hill then overpay the injured Favors out of desperation.

What salt Cy? I like him. I want him to stay. But if he's gonna leave, get the pick,

That's not very realistic. A team is free to shop a player behind his back while under contract. He gets the right to listen to other teams pitches on fit, lifestyle, etc.

No dude. Utah didnt want to give him a max contract so Hayward should have accepted that and just taken whatever contract Dennis Lindsey saw fit for him. He is a slave to Utah.

His loyalty is to his pops and family. If he gets the ok from them he'll bolt no problem.

As a fan without a team, I'm actively hoping he bails. Trading him would a dream-scenario for me at this point. Even if they don't return equal value and just stack young assets like what the Kings did, then let Joe Ingles let it fly for the rest of the season..

The Kings are ****ed. They are in a really bad situation with no budding stars (no pun intended). They will also be drafting at positions that rarely produce stars. We want to avoid their situation at all costs.

Ultimatums are always great in any relationship.
Its not an ultimatum, its a question. Hey wife, will you ever cheat on me? Hey boss, would you ever cut my pay without telling? Hey Gordo, you gonna be here next year?

If you don't get an absolute answer, you can rationalize moving on. Its not an ultimatum. You just want an idea.

Things happen, things change. It isn't responsible to make any promise now. Just focus on playing. The Jazz should have a pretty good idea on his feelings/thoughts, they have spent the last 7 years (especially hte last year as he never left Utah and trained with Johnny Bryant everyday at their facilities) with the guy. There is no need to present an ultimatum. He is playing for the Jazz to get wins right now and working his *** off. Let him focus on basketball.

You don't like Hayward. You have publicly said on this forum he isnt worth his current contract.
I don't think he's a superstar who can be the #1 on a title contender. I dont like the idea of giving him the new max in the summer but I understand that's the cost of business. Better to overpay him than not have him.

Doesnt mean I don't like him.

Utah has the preeminent defensive force at the rim in the league.. There's also the difference of several years of polish on many of the draft pick/projects being developed.

At-Worst a relatively heathy Utah's a 40+win team without Hayward and Hill next year even if they just make pretty good signings.

You also thought maxing him last time was a mistake, and it clearly wasnt. You are probably going to be wrong again about him if the track record holds.

Doesn't the fact they haven't traded him and there's been no buzz about him being shopped tell you that they have a fair idea ? He's entitled to have a look around and isn't obliged to give Utah an answer now. All logical things point to him probably staying. Relax.

Well, we have yet to win a playoff game in the entire life of his expiring max contract. Dont know if I was right or wrong really. Did I underrated him, yes I did.

I think the question is worth asking and getting answered. Think about it, Hill, Diaw and Johnson all rely on Hayward. If he stays, they support an emerging team. If he bolts, they all leave or become borderline worthless. So yes, I think its worth asking and getting a read on his response.

I want him to stay. I hope he stays. I'm ready to see us battle in the postseason. Its been too damn long.

Hypothetical situations, on why prearranged deals can be bad for both sides.

#1
DL meets with Hayward secretly guaranteeing the max if Hayward commits. Hayward agrees.
Hayward tears his ACL the next day. On July 1st does DL break his word to Hayward even though no team is now offering him more than 15m a year?

#2

Hayward drops the ball in the playoffs. Going 10 for 45 and Utah is swept in the first round. Teams have lowered their offers on Hayward to 20m a year, does DL renege on the deal?

This is a consequentialist standpoint. If they didn't match in 2014 there would've been opportunities to allocate the $$, minutes and increased role to other efficient options, some which could be around longer than if Hayward walks this season... Lets say they waited for both Tobias Harris and Harrison Barnes.....

only thing we know for sure is the Jazz didn't win **** the last 2 seasons and this year their chances are seen as 75:1 by many books..

Or a 3rd scenario: some horrific injury happens to Hill/Gobert that completely changes the course of their careers. Does Hayward want to stay after promising to stay?

How long do you all see this setting us back? I mean I get the whole Gobert is our best player. But he doesn't compare offensively to what Hayward gives us. So who would we turn to if he left? I would think Hood but he is hurt more than he isn't. Maybe Burks? But he needs to get away from the hero ball mentality. I just seeing this setting us back a few years if he leaves.

Depends somewhat on who we acquire in free agency and in the draft.

If we lost Hayward and/or Hill, we would have to be aggressive in the trade market. We would have the cap space, picks and expirings (Joe, Diaw, Favors) to get aggressive.

And hopefully, we could convince a good free agent to join. Overall though, we won't be able to replace his role very easily. Not the end of the world, but a big setback.

1 season max if they make the right reactionary moves 0 if they trade him now and return good value.

Do you think Joe Ingles season here has been a contract year uncharacteristic outperformance??

Shabazz Muhammad might be an interesting player to try and bid on in this scenario..

They could start taking tons of fliers on SF's too and they have plenty of draft picks to burn...
