What's new

What if Trey Burke....

Only problem is that Burke is a scoring shoot first pg. he'll need to change from the ground up the way he plays. There's too big a sample to just suggest he's going to all of a sudden get better. As bad a shooter as he was his rookie year, he somehow managed to shoot even worse. Just don't see him making a big enough improvement shooting only marginal improvement, and as bad as he was last year a marginal improvement doesn't mean much, probably.

I don't think this is necessarily true about Burke. His 2nd year at UM he was a pure point and that was his selling point. He set a school record for assist in a season. The biggest knock on Trey IMO are his still below average defense, and his poor shooting.

Whatever he was at UM, he has referred himself as a scoring pg since he's been with the Jazz.

Folks... I think most of us agree that trey doesn't fit the style of the rest of our team. Shoot first, short for his position, less athletic than other players in his position, shorter arms, and he takes pics of his Charlie wang.

Still, I think you guys go way too far here. I was a huge naysayer at the start of 2014 but I loved how he didn't pout coming off the bench. I loved how he came in and got into the paint with ease. His shooting % went down but look at Hayward in 2013. Both were asked to "score" more than the previous year. Snyder and DL both talked about how they had asked trey to come off the bench to boost our offense with the second group. Before he did we went nearly a month watching the bench play great defense and not be able to put the ball in the net with lineups like dante, jingles, gobert, and an assortment of options. We had Kanter come in to score and the offense was paralyzed. Trey won me over as an option off the bench no doubt. He will be back to prove some of you Nancy's wrong this season. He has the starting spot to lose and surely is motivated to make his impression yo!

Bra (currently sagging in the southern hemisphere). Bra out! (Mic drop)

with the options available off the bench now the need for Trey to jack up shots is redundant. Be interesting to see if he plays for the team or his own sense of heroics ..

If Trey Burke continues to throw up bricks as the clock winds down, then there is something very, very, very seriously wrong with his ability to learn. I mean, how dense would the guy have to be?

Fair post. Just one correction. Trey has a 6'6 wingspan so he doesn't have short arms.

If he keeps coming off the bench (if the Jazz replace Exum or use one of the other dudes, whatever), then with Hood or potentially Burks playing with him, and some new offensive guys to involve (Trey2 and Pleiß) Burke should turn his focus to passing. He should average 6-8 assists per game off the bench. If not there is a real problem. With Hood, Trey2 and even Booker or Ingles with him spotting up he has a lot of decent weapons to involve. If he doesn't up his assists he needs to go. Period.

Also, increasing his assists will help his percentages. A BIG reason why Stockton shot such an unbelievable percentage as a guard (>50% for his career FG) is because everyone had to respect the pass. How many times did we see him in rhythm just saunter up the court and hit that pull up from 3 or from the free throw line virtually all alone. No reason Burke cannot do similar with the group he has to work with. Establish the pass and you no longer have to worry about the hand or full body in the face desperation heaves at the end of the shot clock.

Now of course as the starter he has even more reason to include everyone. Great weapons right now. He needs to focus on being the assist guy and let everything else fall into place.

He's too small to be effective on defense. He is a liability.

we saw how one broken link destroys the chain? Same as Kanter...I dont see him as a fit.

I hope im wrong and he comes out playing all star levels.

I very highly doubt Snyder went to Trey and was like "you know that stupid off dribble shot that you hit 15% of the time? I'd like to see you jack up more of those". It is also interesting how Trey used to brick that exact same shot in college. Amazing how different coaches insist he continues to make the same stupid decision! And why should Burke be the only one doing that? Quin should instruct the rest of the team to hurl the ball in the direction of the rim every time they touch it. After all, it's not the shot selection that matters, only the volume of attempts!

It's a matter of having a ball handler and facilitator doing what needs to be done. Trey isn't great at it, but he is doing what Quin, and the Jazz team, needs him to do.

Y'all act like you want more of Kanter post ups, or, Rudy Gobert doing it instead now because Trey sucks and stuff.

Trey plays within the system and does what he's required by Quin.

I think this point is too often over looked when discussing Burke play style. When Snyder moved Trey to the 2nd unit for offense maybe it was exactly what he said it was. Also it doesn't matter how pass first a player is or how great they are at passing. If you can't hit shots or aren't surrounded by other great players that can make shots that player will be limited as the ball handler. Ricky Rubio is having similar problems. And it's why Neto if he can't make a shot will struggle. The problems from what I see isn't as much about the shots he takes(which isn't to say his shot selection is acceptable), but the fact he's missing them.

His height really has little to do with his lack of effective defense. What's killing Burke is his lack of strength, technique, and most importantly effort. It usually take years to build the endurance and strength to be a two way player. Which is why most offensives minded young players in the NBA aren't great defender later into their careers. Trey technique improved during the season which is why he was noticeably better towards the end of the season. When you hear about Burke and his off season training he always talks about transforming his body. I think Snyder has preached to Trey about the importance of defense and Burke has taken it to heart and has work to be a better defender.

Meh. I kinda agree. But I enjoy hating on him anyway.

No he doesn't. He was sent to the bench not because Exum was ready(he wasn't) but because he didn't play defense or within Quin's system. Can he turn it around? yeah. Will he? We will see.

I really admire your ability to maintain faith in your guy in the face of the overwhelming facts against him.

This comment does nothing to address my point or the point of the post I quoted. Everything I've read about Trey says he's an extremely hard worker and I think that hard work will make him at least a quality player. I don't believe in faith. I don't think Burke has tapped out of potential after two seasons. Everything the coaching staff said and prove with their actions shows Trey was asked to assume a role he wasn't ready for and as result it lead to him being a terribly inefficient player. There's no question about it the only question is can he work on the areas of his game to be more efficient. Whether that be making shots or taking less or a combo of both.

excellent post. Most people arent seeing the big picture here, and thankfully arent involved in basketball decisions. Trey wouldnt have started out of the gate in a perfect world. Frankly he may just be a career back up, but I still dont understand the hate. He got no credit when he helped us win, and was throw to the wolves when he had a horrible shooting night. I'm in no hurry to declare his career over in two seasons. I think the 3rd and 4th year is where you look for most players to put it all together.

Why do I hate Trey Burke...?
Well, I must confess to the Rev... I guess, I don't.
Decent enough guy (minus a few dumb, immature posts, which would never happen on Jazzfanz)
Hard worker, I'm sure... and he really did handle the relegation to backup PG with professionalism and class, unlike many in the NBA... or even a recent... olgunlaşmamış kişi
So why the hate? Well, maybe not as strong as hate, but let's say... strong dissatisfaction...

Cuz there's really no one else to be dissatisfied with on the current Jazz roster.
Holy crap... (sorry Rev, won't happen again...) I've had an epiphany (and not the religious kind...)

I love the guys on this team! Hayward's a stud, Favors' loves SLC and is a yoeman, Gobert is God... or at least a demigod, Jingles is waydowncool, Hood's a funny, sneaky bball bandit, Burks is resurrected... and on and on... Not a bad apple in the bunch... even including Trey...

Sure, he wastes possessions, plays slow, isn't big enough to defend well, and is from Michigan... but he's not that bad! But, unfortunately... for a team that is seriously lacking for a starter level PG... he falls short (pun intended)... so, he's going to get the brunt of the complaints...

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I've had hate in my heart... for someone who really doesn't deserve it... but, I'm only human... and a Jazz Fan, at that.

I feel like every fan base needs one guy to bash on. There really is no one else on the Jazz roster to fit the bill. Treys horrible shooting nights make him easy prey.
