What's new

What should the Jazz do for a 3rd big man? And other 2013-2014 ideas.

You lost me at resign Mo. But I'm not worried about a 3rd big so much as I'm worried about getting value for Al and Sap, whether it's trading them or letting them expire. But just to keep being a broken record, I'm a lot more worried that Ty won't be fired.

I'm OK with Mo if its around 7-8 million for 2 years. I hope he is our only returning PG, and I know the Jazz won't start a mid lottery rookie, so someone needs to be here. And I wouldn't mind having one veteran with the young guys (although at year 4 I would consider Hayward a veteran even though he is about 22-23)

Really? I'm thinking that with Gasol, Favors, Hayward getting 30+ minutes a night, that's at least a 4th seeded team easy IMO.
With Favors/Gasol, that would be a nightmare of a frontcourt on length and athleticsm. That could be the best froncourt in the NBA. I mean Pau can dunk the ball without even having to jump.

If your trade works (Bell/Jefferson for Pau) then that would be a dream come true for the Jazz. I just don't think Jefferson fits their offense with Dwight.
Bell is probably over-weight by now, he's done. Nobody wants that POS.

adding 1 player on the tail end of his prime (and losing a cancer) isn't enough to make us better than okc/spurs/clippers. Sure we might match up well against some of those teams, but I just don't see it happening. We would be at that second tier (grizz/denver) but those teams have been together longer and have a better coaches

It's more about adding 1 player, getting the rightful guys more minutes, and losing Al and Milsap. I guess you're right though, the other teams are very good. I just think that making these key moves makes us much much better. It puts us up there with the Grizzlies (moves us up a tier). I also think our defensive rating would skyrocket if we quit starting Foye/Milsap/Jefferson in place with Hayward/Favors/Pau as would our offensive rating.

Right now, we're in the Houston/Portland tier which is an easy first round exit.

Here's what I would do for the Jazz next year if I was the GM.

PG- Mo Will(resign 2-3yrs), Rookie PG in draft, Foye
SG- Hayward, Burks, Foye
SF-Carroll, Hayward, FA
PF- Favors, Player X, Pogo stick
C- Kanter, Favors

My question is, who should be player X? AJ, Milsap, FA (who), or Draft pick (if so who, would be around pick 22 imo).

I'm sick of watching Milsap and AJ not play defense. AJ needs to go. Milsap will go somewhere else likely. I want to see what Favors/Kanter can do when given the reigns.

simpel 3 big man playing 33 minutes per game.
and one scrub.

or let burks play those minutes at center.
he has more of a knack for rebounding than our current starting center

For the however many-th time: the Jazz have to spend 90% of the cap one way or another. Having $40 million in cap space to spare means the Jazz need to find $36 million to spend, basically.
For the many-th time, this simply is not true. Yes, the Jazz will have to spend 90% of the cap on payroll, but they don't have to spend it on cap hit, and certainly don't have to spend it on longterm contracts. Besides, with the new LT rules coming into effect next season, extra cap space may be extremely valuable at next season's trade deadline, when underperforming teams over the LT threshold will be looking to dump players to preserve cash/flexibility. If the Jazz strike out on players they want in free agency, they should fill their roster with cheap shortterm players and wait. It also helps that the 2014 draft looks really good.

Just go hunting in FA for another Landry, Bass, JJ Hickson, etc. I swear they are always available, a team gets them for dirt cheap, and I always say "Wow he was available? and for that cheap??"

THis.

Jazz need to trade their picks. Very few players drafted in the 20's have much impact. Either that, or go after a young Euro who won't be coming over right away. KOC/Lindsey need to go out and get a couple of young guys like they did in Boozer and Okur...players with a ton of upside who were underutilized by their respective teams.

THat.

Here's what I would do for the Jazz next year if I was the GM.

Offer Pekovic a max contract, laugh at Minnesota, hope softie can stay healthy. (13.7, 14.3, 14.9, 15.6)

Can we afford to offer anyone a Max contract with the young guys coming up?

You don't pass on young guys who look like future All Stars just because you have younger guys who might look like future All Stars in a few years. Pek could always be traded for "Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, two first-round picks and a second-round pick.".

Pek is the real deal. He was a sure fire lottory pick if he didn't have that overseas contract. For that, he was a lock for 1st pick in the second round (because they could offer him a better deal than rookie scale two years later).
