What's new

What should we do in the off season?

Wouldn't mind bringing back demarre tbh. Also like the fit of Aminu as a bench guy, there's no way he's picking up his player option. Ditto ed davis.

Ingles is a great glue guy. Every team needs guys like him on the bench and in the locker room. He shouldn't be out there nearly as much as he is. He'll stick around, but it will be more for his intangibles than his skill level. Plus he's still pretty cheap.

Nothing wrong with Joe being the 12th guy...hell if he's that next season I love the depth of this team

Agree. Joe and Millsap will be the 11th/12th guys. That's GREAT depth!
I think Hood is now just about untouchable. Can you get an all-star for the 12th pick and Rodney? Then you do it. But I don't see that happening. Plus the return on investment you get from Hood is phenomenal: $1.3M for a starter/6th man.

Replacing Burke is always a possibility. And Booker is nice, but that contract COULD be an asset. My guess is that both will be back, though.
Jazz have 5 roster spots up for grabs (currently Jerrett, Clark, Evans, Cotton and Cooley).
1. Stretch-4 (either FA or #12 pick)
2. Wing (either #12 pick or FA)
3. Tomic or Pleiss
4. 3rd PG or other big (Cotton, Neto, Motum, Cooley or 2nd round pick).
5. Open in case of injury.

Jazz are likely to trade their 2nd round picks or draft and stash a Euro.

Trade Trey and draft pick for a PG that can be a catch and shoot PG that doesn't try to do too much.
bring Neto and Tomic over

Bring Alec Burks off the bench the way Manu has done with the Spurs.
Let Rodney Hood start to spread the floor for Hayward and the bigs.

I find myself agreeing with a lot of your posts.

May sound odd, but I kind of like the idea of keeping up the youth movement instead of bringing in any vets. I think we're getting a winning culture started and I like the idea of bringing up young players in that environment. Next season still seems a little bit premature to be aiming for true contender status and but the playoffs would be a great start.

I'd like to see pretty much the same roster back next year basically, with one more young big man or possibly a last piece for the wing. And I say bring Neto over as soon as possible- no better place to develop.

Exum/Burke/Neto
Hood/Burks
Hayward/???/Ingles
Favors/Booker
Gobert/???

My top guys in the draft that I'd be willing to move a few pieces to get would be Stanley Johnson(last wing, I believe he has a great shot to develop) and Willie Caulie Stein(not huge potential, but could be a great big off the bench for years to come). I've toyed with moving Burke to help get in to position for them, but I'm not sure how I feel about Exum/Neto as our PGs. I think I'd actually be okay with it as I'd trust all of Hayward/Burks/Hood to do some ball-handling as well.

Anywho, whatever the front office decides to do I trust them moving forward, so I'm looking forward to it all :)

As much as I want Russell, it's likely not happening without including Exum (& as much as I think that should be considered- depending on what would have to be included- that's likely not happening either).

As competitive as we have been recently, the focus should still be on the long-term. By acquiring the right player in the draft & signing the right veteran(s) in free-agency, this team has the opportunity to compete for the playoffs next year, while still positioning itself to be legitimate championship contenders in the future.

#1. Trade our pick (likely #12) + Trey Burke (+OKC 1st if necessary) to move up (likely #6-8) to draft Mario Hezonja.

#2. Do everything possible to bring over Ante Tomic. This may not even be an option, in which case, we would likely focus our efforts in the draft on a back-up center (WCS, Turner, Kaminsky).

#3. Sign Louis Williams to a reasonable contract (3 yrs/$18-21 mil) to start at SG & play some backup PG. This would allow Alec Burks to be our 6th man & facilitate the 2nd unit offense. He could start but his main strengths seem to be his aggression & ability to create his own shot, so rather than changing his game in order to fit him within the system, we should let him do what he is best at by coming off the bench. If we do instead decide to stay within the organization for our starting SG, Hood would be the better fit, but that is a lot to ask (for an entire season) of a 2nd year player who has dealt with injuries in a large portion of his rookie season.

PG: Exum (30)/Williams (12)/Burks (6)
SG: Williams (14)/ Burks (18)/ Hezonja (12)/Hood (4)
SF: Hayward (34)/ Hood (14)
PF: Favors (34)/ Booker (14)
C: Gobert (34)/ Tomic (14)

And this is without even factoring in Ingles or Millsap (both of whom have value as 11th/12th type guys off the bench) so the distribution of minutes could be somewhat of a problem. I would have suggested bringing over Neto as well, so as to at least have 2 full-time PG's on the roster, if I thought there would be enough minutes for him to make doing so worthwhile.

This seems to be the best combination of present/future. It would give us a decent scorer who has some experience under QS (L.Williams) & a potential future #1 scoring option in Hezonja. It would also allow us to compete next year without locking ourselves into the long-term financial commitment that would likely be required to sign a bigger name free-agent, while still potentially providing that last missing future piece (#1 scorer) in Hezonja.

The Jazz think Burks will be Louis Williams. I've heard this comparison a couple of times. I don't think Utah would spend money on Williams when they think they already have him for 10 million per year.

Also, I'm not sure 12 and Burke gets us to 6-8. I think we'd see Burke and 12 moved for a current NBA player before we'd see them moved to move up. Say, if Chicago cuts/amnesties/whatever-it-is-called Rose, they can then give Rose's money to Butler, bring in Burke to help their PG situation out, add a draft pick and send Snell and a future first to us. Trading for Burke also allows them to let Brooks walk, and they can go after a better PG to start for them. It also frees up money/time for McDermott to play.

Makes sense to me. lol.

Or, if you are Chicago, you can keep Rose for two years, bring in Burke for PG depth, get a pick for depth, slide McDermott into Snell's roll. That leaves you some money to sign the 12th pick and use some exceptions, then sign Butler to a max deal. They will pay tax for one year, be under the next year, then Rose comes off the books and they have 20 million to throw at someone.

Yeah, I'm starting to think we aren't going to be using the pick this year unless we move up in the lottery.

For free agents who is everyone thinking we should take a run at?

Backup vs starter is really just what kind of money I'd be willing to pay them and if they'd take the role. Like I'd love Knight in Burke's role, but that's probably not going to happen and I don't want us to offer him close to max money to start for us.

Starting PG: nobody
Backup PG: Beverly, Lin
Starting SG: Butler (restricted), Middleton (restricted)
Backup SG: Danny Green
Starting SF: Leonard (restricted)
Backup SF: nobody
Starting PF: nobody
Backup PF: Ed Davis, Thomas Robinson
Starting C: nobody
Backup C: Wright

These are the guys I feel are at least worth inquiring after. I could see us having a shot at any of the 'backups' and maybe Middleton as well.

I'm more concerned about what we at Jazzfanz should do in the offseason
