What's new

What team is gonna be Corbin's new team?

He will be picked up as an assistant coach somewhere. Maybe the T-Wolves, once they have their head coach in place.

Terry Stotts was never going to be a head coach again.

There are COUNTLESS coaches that had worse records under better circumstances than Corbin did. I'd find it hard to believe he'll never be a head coach in the NBA again. Hell, I'd bet he'll get the job as an interim.

I just can't buy this argument. Yes, many coaches have gotten second chances in the past. But analytics have radically altered the landscape. It used to be that new GM's were rare, and basically just played musical chairs between the 30 jobs. That old boys network led to recycling all the old coaches in the fraternity.

But unscientifically, most of the GM's I see being hired today are new blood, and often come from analytics backgrounds. By extension, these young turks have been hiring more first time coaches. It's utterly crazy that the Van Gundy's, or Karl and Hollins are still out of a job. In the old days GM's would beat them to death with money and drag them to the altar.

Ty's problem is he is the exact opposite of what the analytics guys are looking for. His teams are always bad to mediocre on defense. On offense, he runs a pale reflection of Jerry's schemes and still thinks the 3 point shot is a fad. Not to mention, his teams have always run the PnR poorly while they continue to grind through the post and strangle shot clocks as if the hand check or Charles Barkley rules never happened. It's just an old style and nobody at the pro level in this day and age is going to embrace this.

Ty is better suited to college. He's like a low rent Ben Howland with half the brilliance. And I have no doubt he can extend his career at a mid major playing traditional basketball in a moderately successful, but futile effort to prove the essence of the game never changes.

And by the way, Jerry is a bad example. At his time, he was a genius. When the game was pure post, and mid range shots were sacrosanct, his offense was a ballet of movement to first create shots off the PnR, then create the curls off back screens, and most importantly incorporate cutters. That last point is important. As Ty has flailed at reinventing Jerry's offense in the modern era, I was always stunned to see anyone cut to the basket. It's like Ty forgot the Ronny Brewer baseline cut ever happened, or the AK dives to the basket were part of the old offense.

Ty knows what to do, he just can't conduct the orchestra.

1. He's not as bad as most of you guys think, can perform better with a different group of players. 2. And most importantly, with a different coaching staff!!

He chose his assistants ... so what makes you think he'd choose differently if he gets another HC job? In any case, we don't really know how much influence Lowe and Sanders had on Corbin's poor decisions. Horny also was on the staff, and you see what Horny has done as a HC.
