THT got the first crack… then **** the bed… NAW took the minutes… then you had injuries with Conley and Sexton that forced one or both back into the rotation. It wasn’t Hardy letting guys take turns. If THT hadn’t been awful then NAW doesn’t play (until injuries happen).

The idea a coach will cycle through 3-4 players for a 10-15 minute role in the rotation is just not how it works. One guy will get the nod and be in the spot until he loses it… injuries will provide opportunities to see the other guys. Players perform better with consistency… you can’t see what you have in a guy without a consistent sample.

End of season tanking provides another opportunity to see guys in extended minutes but “garbage time” games can be deceiving.

It would be great news is Hendricks is ready for rotation minutes but none of us have any idea how NBA ready he is. I am very comfortable with the coaches sorting that out. In many cases G league minutes are the best way to develop and learn a system. Very few draft picks are ready for the big stage and just throwing players into the fire is not necessarily a good thing.
 
I got a little insider info… Hardy actually just has the fringe rotation players spin a wheel and the wheel decides who gets minutes that night… if you don’t end up landing in the rotation that night you will at least get a free pen or workout towel. The players seem to really enjoy it.
 
Someone got proven wrong and now has to resort to semantics and over exaggeration.. Another thing to live in HH's brain about me.
 
Hardy might have rotated THT and NAW more because he didn't see either one being much better or more entitled than the other.

But the fact that we saw so little of Dok, Potter, Juzang and Ochai early on in the season sort of proves he was pretty fixed with his minutes distribution and rotations outside of those two guys. Another thing that supports that notion is how difficult it was for Kessler to break into bigger minutes role, even though he showed great signs early on. Actually even had a 12/10 game 1 performance in a win vs Denver.

So in the big picture I would side with the notion that Hardy isn't very inconsistent in his minutes distribution or rotations and doesnt really give chances just to give a chance. I mean go ask Leandro Bolmaro.

Also could have been playing NAW simply to showcase him a bit as ainge might have been thinking about trading him. (though that is admittedly unlikely)

THT played really poorly first 20 or so games. In December when he was a part-time rotation player it got pretty bad. Had we been healthy and not traded away half the roster THT would have been collecting DNPs at the end of the season. He ended up finishing the season strong but was lucky the minutes were there for him to perform. NAW was simply better than he was and deserved the playing time. NAW crushed it in December when given his shot. Then we got healthy (Sexton and Conley alternated injuries in late Nov/Dec). I don't think it was a showcase... just a case of one player not performing and the other playing well.

The idea that we constantly churned the backend of the rotation is not based in fact.

This. All rookies are starting out on the bench. Guaranteed. It might change in a few games but hell it took a while for all our great rookies to get into the starting lineup. If you aren't drafted top 3 there is little chance of starting from day 1. Look at D Will, drafted at #3. Didn't start for the first 1/3 of the season at least.
 
My memory is that in the two situations of THT/NAW and Jones/Dok, there was some significant back-and-forth with minutes played.

I wouldn't say Hardy's whole MO is back-end of the roster cycling, but it's a tool he had in the bag and used last season to an extent. Whether that was for unique (unlikely to be duplicated) reasons or whether he's likely to use this tool again coming up can be debated, but I don't think there's any debate that he didn't do at least a bit of this last season.

I think there's two different things being talked about here. I think HH is talking about cycling on a game to game basis. Normal variation throughout the season based on performance/injuries seems to be more what you're talking about.
