What's up with Ingles?

Joe's usage rate so far this season is the lowest it's ever been in his career, even lower than his first couple of seasons with the Jazz when he wasn't a big part of the rotation and wasn't playing a lot of minutes. Field goal attempts, scoring and assists all down. He's had a few good games but then there's games like last night where he's just sort of out there and isn't really involved in the offense. Something just seems off with him this year, some of it might be age related but I don't think that's all of it.

He looks disinterested and somewhat out of shape even by his dad-bod standards.

Olympics and age are real issues, though and I am glad his ironman streak is dead. There should be lots of rest coming up for him.

It seems he coasts when he isn't really needed and plays a bigger role when we're struggling. Maybe it's the age and wisdom thing, or maybe he's just getting old. Speaking from experience there are a lot of things my mind wants to do but my body refuses.

I was going to start this thread after one more game of the same results from Ingles. Looks legitimately disinterested at times. I’m probably more concerned about him than anyone, tbh.

I can't help but think there is something else going on. He has really lost his edge. His trash talk even seems to be down. He isn't smiling and having fun out there like usual. He is really the soul of this team, but he himself seems to be soulless right now. I wonder if basketball has become a chore for him, which would be a sign he is ready for retirement, tbh. Could just be burnout, too much bball over the last year, too much emotion spent during the Olympics. But when it isn't fun anymore, it is time to hang'em up.

Should we cycle back to the inaugural question about whether Ingles needs to start?
I still think he should. But I do think Quin has a better rotation of bench and starters than he did at the beginning of Conley's tenure. And frankly adding Whiteside really upped the ante on the bench. But I still think Joe would benefit overall in a starting role.

Hopefully, but I don’t know what that has to do with passing up wide-open shots.
He's been guarded pretty tight with very few wide open opportunities. He worked well with Favors in the second unit. We saw a similar outcome without Favors two seasons ago.

I think he is coasting a bit. Not the type of guy to take games off entirely. Conley is taking a lot of rest games (they're the same age) but Joe keeps truckin alomg. He'll be fine.

The numbers don't lie. His production and stats all go way up when he's in the starting lineup. The problem is you can't bench Royce because you need his defense, so the only real option is Bogey and there's no way he's going to the bench.

Well, to be fair, there’s Conley, too. But that doesn’t seem like a great idea either.

I would way rather him take some games off during the season and then be more productive in the games he does play than to have him coast through games.

The only problem with Joe is that we don't have more Joe's. He's fine and at a place in his career where he will come and go. I think there will be some Olympics hangover fatigue. We should manage him a bit better.

He has a new pick and roll partner. He is slowed a bit. I don't think he's checked out... he's always a glue guy so will ramp down his usage as others ramp up. He's making his threes... he's off his normal numbers by a bit. He's fine.

I would be fine with Conley off the bench. He can still be the closer. This would also be a way to possibly limit his minutes. He would play more against backups, and so have a bigger impact potentially. But like I said before, it looks like Quin is already kind of balancing this out as Conley comes out normally pretty quick in the first on his rotation, then comes back in with the bench guys frequently. Might all be moot. But I could get behind bringing Conley off the bench and starting Ingles. Gives you another plus defender with size in the starting lineup. Nothing wrong with that either.

This is probably what we really need to do. Ingles needs some rest time the same as Conley.

Frankly I think it is about time we just cut the season down by 10 games. Make a lot of this rest talk moot.

He's old and played a ton last year, including the Olympics. He's taking it easy.

I think you're right. He's a little slower but he's a pro and he'll take his time easing into his groove. Still getting AST. I just wish he would let it fly when he has an open shot.

Or play your rookie point guard who is a good passer. He'll figure it out. We need Butler to give Conley and Joe a rest before the playoffs, might as well develop him now.

Yeah it is the open shot thing that bothers me the most. I don't expect him to be some high-level athlete. But man when he has the ball and is open and just holds it or passes it off, that is a problem and so frustrating to watch.
