What's wrong with the defense?

Given their personnel I would've expected the Jazz to be at least above average defensively, but they can't even manage that. Is it coaching?

Spread it out wide, attack Tinsley/Lucas, who are playing 8 feet off the ball handler. Pretty simple formula.

Our D is so bad
I wrote a haiku to say
Its all Corbin's fault

Before the season
Lindsay said he will be judged
Judgment day is neigh

So I kinda had corbins back. "Give it some time" I said. "He hasn't had much of a choice" I said. Wow. I was way off base. I knew we were going to lose a lot, but corbin is adding insult to injury. Srs, his offense looks like it was devised by Jackson Pollock and there are gaping holes in our D. Sorry ty but I think this will be your last season in SLC.

I think it's already been well established that Corbin is an awful coach. But this being the final year of his contract couldn't have been better timing - the Jazz will get Andrew Wiggins AND a new head coach next year.

Inexperience. Frank's post highlights that. We don't have that one or 2 players who can step in, calm the rest down, and show them how to do it in a real game. Practice only gets you so far. Now they are working through the sets and techniques with real players who react differently than your teammates do in practice and scrimmage, and our guys just don't know how to keep it going for a full game yet.

If I was coaching against the Jazz, I'd tell my point guard to break Lucas and Tinsley. After my PG is through that tier of defense, pass it to whoever has come to help.
Rinse.
Lather.
Repeat.

If you rinse first, what is there to lather?

1. The defense has been average on a per possession basis.

2. I hate how Jazz bigs are playing the pick and roll. Why overcommit so much, especially with the poor perimeter defenders on the team. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the bigs fall back and protect the rim, and force the opposing perimeter players to prove they can make pull-up 20-footers?

3. Enes has been lazy playing the pick and roll as above. He jumps way out, provides little resistance, and then just stands there for a while for no apparent reason.

We literally have two positions with no NBA players right now: PG and SF. Kind of tough to be good at anything when 2/5ths of your team sucks.

agreed. So why are they playing so many minutes? Why can't we see a lineup that has a CHANCE to compete defensively?

I'll only get impatient with this season when I see bad defense. And right now, Corbin's insistence on LUKE TINSLEY is guaranteeing that outcome.

Utah is :
17th in points allowed per game.
Tied for 13th in FG% allowed
Tied for 8th in rebounding
11th in opponent 3pt%

They appear to be middle of the road. Not great defensively but not horrible either.

Favors said that how they guard it is determined by Ty. It's in the Lowe interview. Varies by opponent. I hate it too.

Plug Burke and a healthy Williams into the starting line up, those numbers will look a lot better.

There is too much help needed once the ball-handler penetrates past the first defender. its the same story we've seen for the last 3 years. there's only so much rotating we can do when the ball swings from inside out after 2 or 3 have collapsed to stop the layup. I think it starts with our poor pg lineup, and will improve to a point with burke, but he may not be that much of an upgrade defensively either. I expect us to be middle of the pack all season, and only there because our rebounding numbers will be high. I still expect teams to light us up from 3 and get easy looks from the effortless penetration they will get all year.
