What's wrong with the defense?

agreed. So why are they playing so many minutes? Why can't we see a lineup that has a CHANCE to compete defensively?

I'll only get impatient with this season when I see bad defense. And right now, Corbin's insistence on LUKE TINSLEY is guaranteeing that outcome.

Burks is now ready for 40 mpg at pg if compared to LT. I almost believe Corbin is trying to lose the first 10 games, while making good subs in blowouts to create some come from behind drama (Burks-Clark-Hayward 4th quarter).

Excuse me for not caring that Corbin is coaching us into losses with the two point guards that were brought on for exactly that. We can worry about defense and winning when Burke returns. Now, let us all pray for a conservative doctor giving clearance.

Yep.

I would like our perimeter players to go under screens more often

Has anyone noticed Richard Jefferson's defensive rotations?

On at least a couple occasions when the D has broken down, I've noticed Jefferson below the free throw line on the weak side with a Jazz big (or other player). When the ball gets swung to the open player up top or on the weak side, Jefferson just stands there in no man's land, forcing the Jazz big to decide whether or not to help out to the perimeter (instead of staying put as he should). If that big runs out to the line, Jefferson continues to stand in no-man's land, instead of positioning himself in decent position to get to either the big on the baseline or the wing in the corner. When the ball gets passed to the big or to the corner, and that player hits the open shot, Jefferson points and yells at the big who he put in a terrible spot (usually Kanter).

Is it just me noticing this? Should Kanter stay put and watch players knock down wide open 3s while Jefferson scratches his ***? What's the correct play?

Alec Burks is the correct play. Then Mike Harris until Marv gets back. R Jeff should not get any more *** scratching minutes.

I noticed Jefferson doing that after a fast break play last night. The replay on nba.com shows Jefferson taking Olynyk and pointing Kanter to cover Wallace. Jefferson actually called out the assignments twice, the first time before Kanter ever crossed half court. If Jefferson did not cover Olynyk then it was an easy pass to him for a layup. Kanter made a rookie mistake by running to a spot or running to his man, instead of reading the transition and guarding whoever he needed to in the scramble. It also looked like he was running the court with his head down, which is why he missed the first signal that Jefferson made.

Fair enough. Still, if this is the problem, Jefferson needs to get back in position once Kanter figures out where to go. He can bark at Kanter AFTER the play is over (Kanter still has significant ball watching problems).

Jefferson can't switch until they stop the break.

It's the early defenders jobs to point out assignments to rebounders coming down the court with their backs to the offense. Notice Alec Burks was also telling Kanter to cover Wallace and pointing that he had the corner. Kanter flat out blew his assignment.

This.
Jefferson is just another in a long line of vets to play in front of burks.

(This post is in no way saying that burks is playing great or that starting burks is the answer to all our problems.... just that jefferson is this years version of raja bell, josh howard, randy foye, cj miles)

Jefferson isn't playing in front of Burks though. He's in a role, Burks in a lead.

I can dig it..... but jeffy did play 32 minutes last night.
Bit much imo

One big problem is that we have only been playing with 10 eligible players. Because our depth is so shallow, players are playing more minutes than they will when we get everyone back. The offense and defense has been hurt because of our lack of depth. Of course it hurts even more when five of the 10 aren't NBA caliber players.
