Seriously, I wish nations would be more embracing of the variety of culture and languages that come from around the world.

When I went to England, I wasn't about to re-learn driving just so I could "fit in" to their arbitrary paradigm. The way they reacted you'd think I had run someone over.

Yeah, it's hard for us in North America to understand. It's just that Europe has generations of entrenched nationalism-- and having 2 world wars definitely doesn't help. Nationalism, and their perception of pride is simply different than ours (see sports riots, etc.), and centuries of establishing/fighting for their national identity has resulted in pretty much what we see today, with nations like France fearing that their culture will be dissolved if they don't control the expression of alternative cultures, like the muslim burka or something.

Why? Because they require that they be fluent in the language of the country the wish to become a citizen of? Good. Doesn't say they cannot speak their language or be proud of their heritage. Just that they have to have the ability to speak the dominate language of the country they are trying to join.

When I lived in Honduras it was my responsibility to learn Spanish. Not for them to accomadate me and learn English.

I think teh **** is pretty dumb. What's next, the they force you to be the same religion? If someone doesn't speak your language it isn't a huge deal. It just takes a little more time to communicate using symbols and body gestures. Both groups of people should do their part to understand each other more, but the whole "you have to learn or you get kicked out" thing is dumb.

With the fast rate of English words being infused in the language replacing perfectly good native words, it wouldn't take more than 10 years for it to disappear. Which would be moot, if Putin decides to "referendumize" them before that.
