Assuming he picks up his option, he’ll be a free agent in 2026. He’ll be ~34 then and his next contract would be much less and probably going the way of a role that guys like Dwight or Mutumbo had at the end of their careers, coking off the bench. If, hypothetically, Kessler is our guy and we’re looking for a backup there, Rudy may desire a homecoming of sorts to return to a place he was loved. Unless something changes in Minnesota, I don’t see that happening there.
Now to the Ainge part. I know Ainge ain’t one for sentimentality, so I’m not arguing that. If Ainge’s name at that point is synonymous with the Rudy/Donovan trades, how much would he like the move of taking back what he sent out (at no additional compensation to Minnesota) to parade Gobert around the league on our roster/bench, seeing the returns obtained from that trade, and still have two first round draft picks yet to convey, all while the original guy is already back on our roster?
We kinda did it with Erik Green, but nobody knew who that was. Maybe we could hire Tim Connelly and give him WTF Randy Rugby’s job was to announce ticket packages that come with a free hotdog and soda.
