Sure wish the Jazz didn't have Rubio and had back OKC's 1st round pick. They'd be armed right now to be able to make a great deal. A lot of teams are seeking additional first round picks and there's not many to be had.

It hurts on so many levels. I understand why we did it obviously but yeah... cap flexibility and that pick would have been great.

I wonder how hard Gordon sold the get Rubio and I’ll come back narrative. We should have just said we will find someone once we get you re-signed but that would have given Gordon something to point to and say that is why I am leaving.

2019 is definitely the year to hit FA. Opening up 2018 FA space makes no sense when 2019 looks to be wide open for the Jazz.

Agree for the most part. I think we operate over the cap and use our MLE and bi annual exception if there are bargains available. If we re-sign Hood we wouldn’t do that as it would close some space in 2019 and put us close to the tax this year.

I think it's possible the Exum/Hood combination could be resigned for 20M-25M total which wouldn't close all that much space on 2019 (still a max spot available) considering how the only players currently under contract are Gobert, Ingles, Mitchell and Bradley (if his option is picked up).

If Rod can fetch a 1st rounder and both sides are moving on, no problem with that. Although, I wouldn't give Rod up to dump a Rubio or Burks though, don't think that offers the same value.

I agree on all fronts. Rodney would affect our 2019 space if we also used our exceptions in 2018 FA. I think having options in both FA periods available to find bargains would be prudent in our case... not putting all FA eggs into one basket.

I would try and move Rubio for expirings without attaching assets, but if that is not an option I'd try and get Dudley from Phoenix or Thomas (or Ron Baker) with their expirings for him... Take that 15 down to 7-10M and then you are within striking distance of offering a max deal if Orlando or Milwaukee really decide they won't go to the max for Parker or Gordon.

I understand your logic, but you are forgetting something. Half of the NBA is in the luxury for 2018-19. So half of the NBA can't even buy. We have two young franchise cornerstones (Mitchell and Gobert) - a 2nd or 3rd tier player might be intrigued by joining. And since many don't have money to spend, we might get a good player for cheaper than when everybody overspends in 2019. So if we have money in 2018 (which we could), we would stand a better chance of buying a player than we would when almost all of the league has money in 2019.

When I think of possible 2018 targets, I'm thinking of guys like:

Avery Bradley
Mirotic (if his option is somehow declined)
Tyreke Evans
Kyle Anderson
Will Barton
JJ Reddick
Patrick McCaw
Ilyasova
Herzonja

And of course we have the opportunity to take a contract if we wanted. If Portland dumps a guy like Harkless and we actually wanted him, we could. This summer will be chaos since so many teams are staring down the luxury tax. Some, like Portland and Washington, will be looking at repeat offender if they don't make a move.

Jazz should make some offers to magic for Gordon. He is a dream fit. They should also go after Fournier if it's reasonable.

Jazz are in a decent position to be really aggressive. We have some things a few teams seem to want and need to leverage that into a great deal. I think draft picks aren't really getting moved much but players will be.

This might be the busiest trade deadline for the jazz and it should be.

I almost just started a Kawhi thread but I figured the whole forum would block me. But seriously, why not try for Kawhi? If he is truly unhappy, he only has one more guaranteed year left on his deal. He could simply walk from San Antonio in 18 months. And good God, what a great fit he would be with Gobert and Mitchell.

What would the first offer be?

Let’s start with Hood. Before the rise of Donovan Mitchell this season, Hood looked to be in a position to assume the role as the dominant scorer on the Utah Jazz following Gordon Hayward’s departure. At just 25 years old and in the final year of his rookie contract, Hood may not be worth the price tag for Utah this summer considering their find with Mitchell.

Should the Jazz actually move on from Hood, it’s unclear what they would ask for in return at this point. Yes, Hood his an impending free agent, which could diminish his value. But the team trading for him would assume his Bird Rights, therefore giving them a better shot at retaining him this summer should they choose to do so.

The best part about his potential fit in Philadelphia is that he fits the timeline of the rebuild while also addressing a need in the present. Being just 25, Hood fits alongside the core of Embiid, Simmons, Fultz, Dario Saric and Robert Covington as a young player. If the Sixers were to miss out on whoever they were planning to target with their financial flexibility this summer, Hood would still be there to plug in for years with a contract extension.

Shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc this season, and displaying the track record of being able to fill up the score sheet, Hood could become the go-to-scorer for Philadelphia when Embiid isn’t on the court, or late in games when they need to stop an opposing team’s run.

While he appears to at least be on the table as of now, Hood is certainly worth checking in on from the Sixers’ standpoint.

B.) PG13 is the only guy that will hit the open market this year that will be worth more than just keeping Hood. Every other name you listed is a terrible option for Utah to try to open cap space for.

C.) Jazz should take Favors, Burks, Rubio and JJ (plus draft picks) and try to turn them into Mirotic and Fournier somehow. Those two guys would be great fits for the Jazz IMO. (2018 pick is off limits unless it comes with major protections.)

D.) I don’t think Hood is going to get nearly the offer that some people think he will. Jazz should just keep him and Exum at this point. They still fit into Rudy/Donovan's timeline.

A. Fair, but I only want to pursue him if the cost is right.

B. PG is a waste of time to discuss. However, I'm not opening space to go all out on these guys. I'm dumping Burks and using his $11.5 for next year on something better. It's conceivable that we can get two of the names I listed for what we will pay Burks. To me, that's a no brainer.

C. Fournier and Mirotic are worthy targets, but I don't think we have the assets for both unless we trade a 1st.

D. Hood will get paid this summer $15+. Philly has money and could use him. Same for all of the bottom dwellers with money (Atlanta, Suns, Lakers (should they strike out on big fish), Bulls, Nets, etc.). All those teams have the ability to pay him and could give him a big role. It doesn't matter though - our FO will make the decision on his fit and his cost before deadline day.
