What's new

Which players currently on their rookie deals do you think will be on the Jazz on their second contract?

It’s too early to make large judgements about the majority of players. The only “young” player I feel like we a decent read on is Kessler. I think we’ve seen his floor (last year) and his likely ceiling is something a bit higher than he was his rookie year. Kessler was an instant impact player, which was great, but he never struck me as a prospect with a wide range of outcomes.

Generally, I think it’s a fools errand to pencil in players that haven’t come close to their full development. I learned my lesson from the core 4 era.

S/O Alec Burks I always knew he would have the longest career!

Core4 for the win. What an absolute travesty. Kanter, Favors, Hayward & Burks. Squandered that rebuild.

Dude its a simple projection drill to pass the time. Not participating is fine, but being all holier than thou about it isnt.

So crazy to look back at that time and see where everyone ended up. Favors was an old man before 30 and came back to collect a painful check. Hayward’s last stand was being traded to a playoff team despite him telling them he was cooked. Burks is still in the league as a prolific 3 point shooter. Enes? Is he still trying to be a Fox News guy?

I thought Trey Burke would monumentally change the franchise lol.

Breathe. I said it is too early for me on guys besides Kessler. I’m not the only one saying it’s too soon to tell lol. No need to reach for reasons to be upset.

Great question.

I honestly have no idea. I’m most confident that Sensabaugh will not make a second contract.

With Brice, I wonder if they decide to cut the crap with the on ball stuff. If he has a future in the league, it's probably as a highly accurate/higher volume spot up shooter with a pinch of self creation. I've always though his upside was something like Bogey who was killer making those wide open corner 3's and had some success in the post against smaller players. But whenever Bogey started dribbling the ball and initiating, I just cringed because it was bound to be a turnover. I think Brice has the same on ball ability unfortunately....he's not great as a high PnR initiator, but maybe he can knock down open shots and use that big body against small players. I know they've tried to develop him as a playmaking guard more than a small/stretch four, but if the playmaking stuff was every going to work out I think he'd be farther along than he is now.

You called it a fools errand and said its too early period. Also said "only person we have a decent read on is Kessler". Thats just a bunch of arrogant BS.

Im not upset, but the topic is a great one so lets keep it going. I wanna read more takes from those who dont lack the vision/boldness.

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days and it is an interesting question. There are a couple things to keep in mind with this discussion that are just to hard to calculate.

First is the players development. If the player progresses it becomes more important to re-sign them. Lack of development means getting rid of the players.

Second is related some to the first. As players develop they will need the ball more and more. There is only 1 ball and so many shots that can be taken. Only so much playing time. Thus limiting the amount of development.

Third is also related also to the previous 2. That is the salary cap. It is somewhat advantageous for the Jazz to develop some of these players slower so that they can be re-signed at a lower rate. Thus helping the cap and breaking out on their second contract.

Fourth is the hardest to factor in and that is trading away young talent for championship players. Example would be if Doncic became available. It would take young players to make any trade happen. (Just an example)

Fifth is future drafts. If the Jazz get a star player that takes playing time or the ball away from other players.

With that said this is my list.

Hendricks - I think is the most likely to be here on his second contract. I think he will have a little slower development and thus hit big with his second contract. He is also what trams need, 3 and D.

Williams - has the most potential to be a break out star of the players on rookie contracts. In my opinion he is a future star. With that said he might also be the target in future trades.

Filipowski - is destined to be a key role player in the league. Those players are valuable but are usually signed for reasonable contracts.

George - has the tool and the IT to be a good player. If he can become more efficient he could be a star. If he doesn't he will be our next Clarkson. If he buys into that roles he has value. He is a tough one.

Collier - he has potential to be a good PG and potential to be a career back up. A lot depends on his development. He seems to play with an alpha mentality but he has a long way to go.

Kessler - is down this far because it seems the Jazz already have tried to trade him. He seems like an easy going player but he needs more nasty. His lacknpf offense hurts but will he ever get an opportunity to prove himself or improve. At this rate he might be a bargain on his second contract at this rate.

Sensabaugh - is the most unlikely at this point because players like him are a dime a dozen. He might be a journey man in the NBA. I just see him as the first gone on this list.

Many guys have mentioned that Kessler could be a bargain on his next deal. However he did finish 3rd for ROTY and made the all-rookie team, as well as the FIBA team in 2023.

I dont know how much weight those types of achievements carry when agents negotiate, but I'm curious to see what others think.
