Which players currently on their rookie deals do you think will be on the Jazz on their second contract?

Looking ahead, the front office has a number of important decisions to make over the next couple of seasons. We have a bunch of rookies that we all hope will turn out to the the best players in the world. We know that a number of them will never be as good as we hope or think. As fans we subjected to invest a lot of feelings in these players and are bound to value them higher than the rest of the league will.

If the Utah Jazz are going to become a contending team over the next 5-6 years, they need to avoid handing out too big contracts to players who don`t contribute enough to winning. If for example Keyonte George turns out to be 90% of what Trae Young is on offense and just as bad on defence, he needs to be traded. We cannot afford to spend 25% of the salary cap on players who do amazing things every fourth offensive possession and are turnstiles on every defensive possession.

The player I think is most likely to still be on the team on his 2nd contract, is Taylor Hendricks. His skillset is extremely valuable and it looks like he won`t be a highligt reel kind of player. If he figures it out, he has the chance to become a type of player every winning teams need. If we can get him signed for around 15% of the cap, which would mean a deal presumably starting at around $28 million in 2027, I would love that.

Keyonte George is actually the player that worries me the most. I obviously love the guy, but have concerns about him not being the right kind of player to be a solid starter on a competing team. If he proves me wrong I would be delighted and he`ll have deserved his 25% max contract. If there are doubts I would hate to max him out and would much rather trade him than max him.

In Danny Ainge we have a man who is not afraid to trade players like this. IT was shipped to Cleveland because Ainge saw that he was not the kind of player the team needed. I think we are due for a couple of trades over the next few years that initially will seem awful to us as a fan base, but prove to be good deals when we see what they become.

The only other young player I have seen enough to have any opinion about, is Walker Kessler. If he improves this year, an extension on about 15% of the cap seems right to me. If he wants more or is not satisfied with his role, I`d want to trade him.

I think its complex to try and anticipate this since we dont really know what the FO/Hardy wants the kids to do/show. I think Keyonte last year is a good example of that. We all saw him doing a lot of negative things but nonetheless he was the one rookie that Hardy felt like was doing more right things than any of the others. Its hard to argue that TH was more of a "negative force" on the court with his minutes, yet he got like half of what Keyonte got despite having a higher draft pedigree.

So it would be reasonable to assume that they were trying to push a lot of stuff on Keyonte's plate which eventually did lead to a dramatic fall in quality (maybe that was just the long season though). But for a long stretch he was trending to a good direction, and I would assume he continues to trend that way now that he is better assimilated to Hardy's system/preferences.

So in a nutshell, Keyonte is by far the most likely guy to be here on his next contract, while Brice is probably the unlikeliest guy. Kessler did good things on his first year but obviously last year he lost some of his momentum which was also reflected in his playtime/role (part of that was on Collins though). This years rookies are a mystery box to me though so I'm only looking at the quartet of Kessler, Keyonte, TH and Brice.

So to answer the OP in a more condensed way, I would rank them like this:
Keyonte
....
Hendricks (more desirable archtype)
Kessler
....
Brice

I think both Hendricks and Kessler are in the "keeper" category right now. Its not fair to Brice to put him outside of that just for the lack of opportunity.... but the lack of opportunity itself is telling and he didnt really light it up in the G League even though theoretically he is the type of player who could do that.

In terms of who has proven the most so far, you are spot on. My worry is that KG is that kind of player that could command a max contract without him being a player type to be worth it. I don`t see this with TH, but I could obviously be very wrong on both of them.

I see that and agree that Keyonte will much more likely be a bigger investment and thus a more difficult decission.

But at this point I'm just excited about seeing how he develops in year 2. I know the antics were one point of emphasis for the offseason, so hopefully we see a more mature Keyonte. I dont think they will push a ton of defensive pressure on his plate. I think they want to see where his offensive ceiling is before they start whipping him into shape.

I mentioned this in another thread, but we can't keep all of our young players and picks, we won't have enough roster spots. I think we are going to have to make some decisions on which young players/draft picks we can consolidate as early as this summer. This means we won't really have as much time as you would like to make those types of decisions.

It's hard for me to see the young player's contracts being a factor at this point. We likely have to make those kinds of decisions in the future, but that's in the distant future, so too much can happen between now and then.

Good thread.

I'm going with cody, Hendricks, Kessler, flip

I'm most sure about Hendricks. Everyone else are more of a crapshoot for me. They probably finds better playmaker than Keynote in the next draft, and he is going to become more tradeable kid for the FO. If Walker can become his rookie season self again, they might want to hold on him, even his one sided offensive tool bag hinders the offensive ceiling quite a much.

Can't say anything about current rookies but I believe the most in Flip having the highest floor (not the ceiling though), so if Jazz moves into contending in three years, you need guys like that off the bench.

How about who will be the next Jazz coach after the coach who will replace Will Hardy? Lets discuss this topic as well.
