My guess it it exists so teams wont just keep putting random people out there to foul. With a 12 man roster you start losing backups if you implement that strategy, though I would agree that the difference between 12 and 13 for that is pretty minimal.

On that note in a just world Bell would be the inactive. But in a league where head coaches seem to value experience, it'll be a poor guy like Evans...sigh. Though with Memo gone it may be a guy like Tinsley, which wouldn't be too awful though I thought he looked fairly decent in the one preseason game.
 
With Millsap just getting over an injury and Evans still a b/u PF, Evans should remain active. Plus, I think he's been designated our 'energy' guy now that Price is gone. I think he'll stick.
If all 3 PG's are healthy, one of them will be inactive, unless Coach Ty wants to use PG's at both G positions for extended minutes, which we've done before. It'll depend on his game plan.
With Okur gone, Kanter stays active, I'd think. I like Burks, but he could be part of the inactive rotation. Depends on how quick he picks things up. I suspect they'll want to get Howard on the court to get more rust off him, assuming he's totally healthy. OTOH, they may want to control his minutes and sit him occasionally.

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that we can dress 13 until early Feb, and then after that we can still dress 13 but only 12 of them are allowed to play. Can't find the reference. Anyone else heard of this?
That means that you can make a decision during the game which player to sit. If your bigs are getting worked over or in foul trouble then Tinsley becomes the man to sit that game. Or... if Harris gets gimpy then Tinsley gets playtime and someone like Evans/Kanter won't get to touch the floor.
Sounds like a good idea. I just can't verify.

I also wonder if that is just for this year or for every year....
 
One of the rule changes that I was hoping to see was that if you can keep 15 players, you can dress all 15. I don't see why the owners or players would have been against that. I suppose it does give a slight advantage to teams that decide to keep 15 players over 13 players. That's the only reason I can think of.

18 extra fouls to give could have a significant impact on the game, especially if there is a dominant player who doesn't shoot foul shots well on one of the teams.
 
Sadly I put Evans, I just don't think Coach will sit Kanter, Bell, or Howard over Evans, although they probably should.
 
This problem is going to last all of a week. I put the over/under at 5 games before someone turns an ankle, has soreness in their knee, shoulder, wrist, etc and The Jazz start scrambling to find healthy bodies.

Well, several years ago, you had a 12-man roster - period. But there was an injured reserve to be used for INJURED players. What was truly amazing back in those days was how coincidental some of the injuries became. One player would be taken off IR just as another went down with some mysterious strain or ailment. It was actually quite comical to read the medical reports. Honest franchises were disadvantaged at first. And, as you can imagine, there was quite a rash of injuries after the last preseason games as final rosters were set and 1-2 guys from each team always came down with a strained muscle, bent finger, jambed toe, etc. I actually think there was some kind of competition between franchises to come up with the best sounding injuries (probably had interns leafing through medical and anatomical books). It was such a joke, the league just decided to do away with the IR and go to an active/inactive system.

I'm assuming the limit of 12 is an attempt to balance the playing field. Most of the time, all teams will have at least 12 guys who can suit up - or they can quickly sign someone. Go with 13-15 and you may create an advanatge for one team over another in case of injuries or with some teams carrying 13 while others go with 15. Besides, outside of blowouts, you rarely see more than 9-10 players get action in any given game.

Pretty much. Though now we're down to only one guy, right? So it has to be Bell, Burks, or Howard. Am I missing something?
