I just dont think you can outright waive guys like NAW/Gay because their salary could be crucial for salary matching purposes should a trade arise.

FWIW, Butler is actually younger than Ochai. I don't think the Jazz can give up on him unless there's something that's just broken about his game.

I think Butler is a guy you play off the ball as a floor spacer and second-side creator. If you look at how Detroit has used Killian Hayes last year, that's a good example.

He's a 6' tall PG who is destined to be a career backup if he reaches his potential. That's why you waive him.

Jared Butler hasnt even shown he can play in the NBA yet, much less be a versatile guard who can play off ball.

Teams are going to gamble on size/length/defensive ability.

Jared Butler had a shot to look good in SL and he looked like complete ***.

Granted Bolmaro did too, but at least Bolmaro can defend.


I doubt any of the current cuts are predetermined with the exception of Saben Lee (getting the exact $$$ amount of his contract back in the trade is telling) and the guys who have signed Exhibit 10 camp deals.

Butler is definitely on the outside looking in though. If he isnt great in camp he isnt making the team.

And while he might be 6'3 in shoes, he's a very sleight 6'3 w/ a 6'4 wingspan and a 8'2 standing reach. He's a slightly undersized lead guard by starting standards and a hugely undersized 2-guard.

If it comes down to him or Bolmaro being cut, Bolmaro will have a contractual edge due to the fact that he has 3 more years on his rookie deal.

Okay, now what about the fact that THT has been in the league for 3 years (granted, one was affected by covid). The knock on him coming into the league was that he is inefficient offensively. Now after three seasons, his shooting has never improved, and it actually regressed last season. He's a sub-Westbrook shooter (41.6% FG / 26.9% 3P) who took 9 FGAs a night last year. What if THT just can't shoot?

The hope is that he's a big, physical guard who can be something like a poor man's Marcus Smart, but he's also now entering his 4th season and hasn't shown he can do much at an NBA level. If he can't make himself into an impact defender, how does he stay in the league?

The Jazz just traded specifically for him so that should tell you what they think of his potential and I dont really have to sit here and speculate if he's going to make the roster. He's going to make the roster.

A backup SG that can't shoot isn't going to be missed either. I think the Jazz want to give both young players a chance to prove themselves this year.

At this stage, I wouldn't just give up on either one of them yet. I'd jettison Saben Lee and Rudy Gay first. I'd try to move one or both of Conley and Clarkson during the season. For me, the final cut would probably come down to Udoka or Stanley Johnson. They're both 3rd-string players.

I mean you could say the same about Dok as a backup center or Rudy Gay as a washed vet. I think JB has more potential than solid backup but I get why he’d get cut.

SA and Indiana are both like 15M below the salary floor. I wonder if we could send NAW into their space without sending any assets. It might be helpful in future trades and it’s essentially a free flyer on a player.

Both teams have tons of space and likely not going to utilize it all.
