Who should be our starting SF?

It's the only real question left for our team and spot were thin on. So who should be the SF?

There are some realistic value players out there that the Jazz could get. Especially if they trade Millsap.

I want to see if Millsap can play the 3 against most opposing starters. I agree some will give him problems, but if Millsap remains w/ the Jazz they could go smaller and use Hayward at SF in those instances. With Paul's shooting skills, I think he can be a big 3. That's the direction this team is headed - try to create size mismatches. Hayward-Favors-Millsap (at SF): those guys would be able to post up against almost all opponents. Jefferson isn't 7'0" but with his inside game he plays bigger on offense. Kanter is a big, physical presence. Burks is a tall SG. Jazz are going to be formidable on offense if the young guys develop.

Millsap also gives the Jazz the flexibility to go smaller at the 4 when needed. Also believe we should pick up CJ's option. It's likely the Jazz get a SF in next year's draft or via trade. Most FA's are going to want a multi-year deal. CJ is the perfect bridge and he also has value as a trading chip at the deadline, either as an expiring contract or as a wing for a contender. I think the Jazz could get the same value for him as they did for Ronnie Brewer (a 1st-round pick).

Whether or not the Jazz keep Millsap, I just don't think they should spend the money on an extra player. Fill the position with CJ/Millsap until next year's draft. Then they either get a rookie SF if/when they draft or make a trade to move up or get a veteran SF.

Can Millsap guard Derrick Williams? That's who he'll be matching up against 4 or 5 games a year.

Derrick Williams would be the last type of SF I would be worried about him guarding. I'd be more worried about Wilson Chandler, Grant Hill, Batum,etc. SF's who aren't all the great, but their speed advantage on Millsap is going to be enough to make them seem a lot better than they are, potentially. We all know Durant and Lebron are going to own him, but they own anyone, so it's not like it matters.

Millsaps peak value for the Jazz is at PF as a 6th man not as a SF experiment. If he doesn't want to be a 6th man, the next best thing in terms of value is to trade him for a legit SF. I would like to see an attempt to snag Batum if possible.

That is the smartest thing I have ever read about Millsap. He is the best PF in the game coming off the bench and if not then he is an amazing trade chip that the Jazz can play with.

Yeah, Millsap can't guard LeBron or Durrant, but neither can the other two asshats.

Not that I don't think Millsap would be better for us off the bench, but let's make a list of teams Millsap wouldn't start for. Just because he isn't ideal and isn't 6'10" doesn't mean that we should go out and pick up a guy like Robin Lopez who's 7' and plays and rebounds like he's 6'4".

didn't ty corbin tried millsap at 3? He did, and it was not a good experiment at all. millsap is certianly a PF and he has not got the ball handling and quickness to play at 3, but i am so pleased that he improved his range significantly.

It's not just defense. How does Sap's skillset translate to playing offense as a wing? He definitely can't drive from the perimeter. I can't even fathom he could become a good shooter off screens. He excels in the pick and pop and screen and roll, but he won't get much opportunity for that as a wing. So he's not going to be a difficult cover. When the ball gets swung to him outside you can safely play up on him. And even an average NBA 3 is going to have a solid quickness advantage on him which means he's going to take a lot more contested jumpers when they close on his shots.

He excels in the pick and pop and screen and roll, but he won't get much opportunity for that as a wing. So he's not going to be a difficult cover. When the ball gets swung to him outside you can safely play up on him. And even an average NBA 3 is going to have a solid quickness advantage on him which means he's going to take a lot more contested jumpers when they close on his shots.

So you invert your offense. Millsap can post every small forward in the league but Lebron. Favors and Kanter have capable jumpers. Jefferson's jumper is decent. This works even better if Memo can give us 10-15 minutes a night. Defensively you probably have to play some zone then. Which isn't a problem as Dallas showed this year if it is a good zone.
