Anyone know who is who judging off of the stats? Any guesses?

Yep. Matthews has really been struggling after having a great pre-season.
Fortunately for Portland, they have Brandy Roy as their starter. He's just a tiny bit better than who the Jazz have as their starting SG.

Yeah, but one of those guys ALWAYS plays good defense while the other guy NEVER plays good defense. And one guy's shots are ALWAYS within the offense while the other guy NEVER takes a good shot. Also, one guy is INTENSE while the other guy SMILES too much and doesn't really try that hard.

Comments like this are what make this board so great.

Also, is it just me, or does Matthews look like he put on some weight in the offseason?

I've watched him a bit this year; meh, for that money, no thanks. Portland is still lame, though.

It looks like Matthews "attacks" the basket instead of settling for jump shots. He seems to get to the line much more than Miles.
Miles could go to the rim more, I have seen him do it, and when he does it helps him have a better game and takes pressure off of DWill. DWill should not be the only one attacking the rim like that.

CJ has been driving to the rim a lot this year. Of course, one of his key roles is also to shoot outside to prevent other teams from collapsing the middle. The irony of the free throw disparity is it probably adds 10 more shots to Wes' total attempts not registered in the box score. And given the rate those shots are presently going in, there might even be Portland fans nicknaming him Catch n' Jack Matthews.

I like Wes Matthews by the way. I want him to succeed in Portland (except against us.) But he's as overrated to Jazz fans as CJ is underrated.

No, he hasn't. If he was, he'd (a) be shooting a better percentage than last season and (b) be getting fouled more and taking more free throws than last season. But his FG% is down from .429 to .356, and his FTA/Min this season is right where it was last season (.063 last season which was a team low, .067 this season, against a career mark of .065). What he has been doing this year is jacking up threes at a greater rate, last season his 3PA/min was .145, this season it's .172 (the highest in the team). He is still the one-dimensional player he always was.

I'm watching the games, not trying to deduce what's happening from box scores and FT totals. Here's the Shot Charts:

Game 1: 3 outside, 1 inside
Game 2: 2 outside, 2 inside
Game 3: 6 outside, 7 inside
Game 4: 7 outside, 5 inside
Game 5: 6 outside, 6 inside (one at FT stripe)
Game 6: 8 outside, 5 inside

CJ is going to the hole several times every game. He isn't getting a lot of foul calls at this point which is another discussion. But he's actually taken far less curl jumpers (which he's supposed to take anyway) than he has drives to the hoop. On top of that, he should be taking several 3's a game by design. Those splits are right about where he should be.

I haven't watched enough of the games (I've seen a good amount though) to agree or disagree with you but what defines outside/inside? Because if it's the three point line, then I'd be inclined to say the apparent balance in shooting is misleading and far from means he is taking it to the hole and instead would really only mean he's taking about half of his shots inside the three point line and in the paint or true inside shots would be a whole 'nother matter.

Like 90 percent of the 'inside' shots I listed were inside the key. I included a few that were just outside the key (Miles has had a few post ups that fit my bill for 'inside.') The outside shots are all 16 footers or thereabouts. A few are the curl jumpers while the bulk are 3's.

I can't follow the logic of not wanting to include 3's as 'outside' shots. This team REQUIRES CJ to take several 3's a game. If he can stay at 40 percent, he should taking around 4/5 a game. That would mean his splits will always "favor" the outside shot when you factor in curls, but that's by design. Because if he's connecting on 40 percent from outside, teams have to guard him out there.

Thanks man.

One good thing about CJ, which I'm not sure anyone has ever pointed out, is the fact that he is very hard on himself. He's come out multiple times in the media stating how ****** he'd been playing and how badly he'd felt about that, and then seemed to pick it up some after that. It could be him feeling sorry for himself and looking for pity. Or it could be him simply holding himself accountable. Either way, I like that he expects more from himself compared to say some of the me first hoppers in the league. Now, we just need to see the light bulb go off and remain on for an extended period of time.
