What's new

Why doesn't infraction lead to decreased Rep power?

What does the formula look like now? The older posters seem to have benefited.

Yeah, I decreased the effect of post count. I increased the effect of time-since-registering (which helps older posters). And I increased the effect of overall reputation.

I was tweaking the rep setting, then forgot what I started with. So I'm not sure how close these are to what we've been using but here are the new settings:

1 rep pt for every 100 days since registering (I believe the old value was every 130-150 days, something like that)
1 rep pt for every 5000 posts (I don't know what the old value was... perhaps every 3000-4000 posts, something like that)
1 rep pt for every 300 pts of reputation (this is lower than the old value, but I don't have a good idea of what the old value was)

Boo! So much for ever catching anyone that's ahead of me. FYI, the last settings I was aware of were:

1 rep power point for every 141 days and 2500 posts. I don't remember the reputation though.

Holy cow, is PKM that much higher in rep power than Jason & me? Time to do some rep rebalancing, I guess.

Can we start out at zero again? I think it helps with newer posters feeling more empowered/less marginalized due to a stupid e-score. Same Batman and Robin will end up on top again in a few short months anyway.

What would that make me if I'm a few rungs below Batman and Robin?

The major factor is your own # of reputation points. (That's different than rep power.) You can still catch people by getting lots of rep points.

It'll take even longer now is all I'm saying since most of the people with more rep power got points added while I stayed the same. But I'm persistent in the pursuit of pointless acheivements, so it's all good.

If you just take away the part of the formula where you get rewarded for how long you've been a member, it'll give new members the chance to catch up if they are worthy.

If you think about it, the system as it stands is very similar to the Jazz. Blindly rewarding the veterans...

I think the rep system should just be based 100% on how many rep points you've received, giving no weight to the amount of time youve been a member, or how many posts you have.

It's a little hard for me to see how anything else makes sense to be honest.

Neg rep doesn't make sense to me - because if a comment is bad enough to be an infraction then the mods can deal with it anyway. Furthermore, neg rep can lead to posters abusing that power in a negative way, and there's nothing the mods can do because it's not against the rule to simply neg rep someone. This loophole should be closed.

Pos rep is good. Neg rep should be abolish IMO.
