What's new

Will Hayward and/or Gobert go the the All-Star game this year?

Worst all star game in sports in the Pro Bowl. The NBA all-star game is a very close second. I have not watched a single minute of either of those 2 events in 10 years. Not worth the time, completely pathetic. Baseball sucks balls so no point in watching their all star game.
Wait, so you have not watched a single minute of the all star game in 10 years?
I'm definitely not going to value your opinion on something that you have not even seen

Or you could gain insight into why people don't like it even though they like the sport...

What do you mean. If someone has never seen something but they dont like it then i cant take that very seriously. If he doesn't even give it a chance in ten years then what insight could i gain from that poster?

I dont get why people dislike it so much. It's fun. Guarantee if Gobert or Hayward gets in it, people will watch and enjoy the time they are in the game. Hayward might be boring in an All-Star game, but Gobert would be fun.

10 years does not = never unless you are 10, which I am far past. The scores of the games convinces me that it is the same **** only worse than when I stopped watching. Combine that with reports and input from other fans I have gathered that in the last 10 years the things I hate about both games has gotten worse not better.
.
The insight to be gained is that a lot of sports fans don't consider those events as sporting events. Might as watch WWE, or whatever the hell they call themselves now. It's entertainment for the easily entertained. And holds no value as a sporting event in any way. At least that is my opinion.

I wouldn't. It's not any fun at all IMO. I like my sports to matter to the people on the court. The All star "game" doesn't matter to anybody on either team. Therefore it has no entertainment value to me. Summer league is 1000X more entertaining than the ASG.

If you watched the all star game then you would know that sometimes it does matter.

I have seen games where two superstars are going at it very competitively trying to win the mvp award (durant, melo, lebron). These guys care about their career resumes/accolades and want that recognition.

I have seen games where it was close at the end and all players on both teams took it very seriously/competitively and played defense and tried to win the game.

I remember an all star game (I think it was the rookie sophomore game actually) where kyrie irving and tim hardaway jr (iirc) went back and forth at each other with each guy trying to stop the other one and not being able to. (It was pretty awesome to see those two guys both on fire at the same time going at it)

Plus watching elite athletes fly through the air for amazing dunks is very enjoyable for many people.... Hell I have had fun at actual games just watching guys in warm-up going through the layup lines..... Definitely nothing being played for there but that was where I first realized that Rodney hood had pretty damn under-rated hops. (He put on a show at his rookie year jazz scrimmage on the layup line)

Pretty much this.

Yeah, a good amount of it is just them jogging up and down the court jacking shots, but cool things happen during the game. Little battles happen where players try. Crazy dunks happen. Then when the game actually gets tight in the final minutes, they really start trying. I mean, it's not a great game, but it is cool IMO.

Different strokes for different folks. I get why some like it. But to me it's the worst kind of exhibition game. Nothing on the line and most of what Fish said is what is wrong with the game to me. one on one me first basketball with no defense and nobody really caring about the outcome for 95% of the game. To me it's really boring. The last time I watched one 10+ years ago I fell asleep before half time, there was just not any entertainment value to me. Nothing seems to have changed, in fact by all accounts even Fish's account here, the things that bore me have gotten worse not better.

Sometimes is the problem. For 2 minutes of the rare close game the players reportedly care. So I have to watch 46 minutes of boring *** ball to get to the part where the players "May" care? No thanks. The other 46 minutes is just a highlight real but without any defense, so less impressive than a highlight play in a real game.

You forgot about the other scenarios that I mentioned.
Not just the last two minutes but also sometimes you have two all time greats who both really want All Star MVP as a part of their resume/legacy and they compete against each other for that trophy.

Or when a couple guys get on fire. That is also fun to watch.

Or seeing someone do a dunk contest style of dunk in a game situation in traffic (granted the "traffic" is not trying very hard to stop the dunk but it is still a court full of nba players rather than an empty court). Vince Carter throwing it off the glass to himself and dunking on somebody comes to mind.

You definitely don't watch the game to see which team will win or lose cause that doesn't really matter obviously. But that does not mean there is no reason to watch it or that nothing good or competitive happens in the game worthy of watching it.

To each their own I guess.
I really like the game of basketball... Hell I even watch little kids play sometimes at my rec center after working out.
You may not find anything about the all star game worthy of your eyes but for someone like me who loves the game, I find plenty to watch for.

Hell I even enjoy playing horse, or tornado too

I addressed that in the post to Cy. One on one basketball for personal stats doesn't interest me. And is not basketball, IMO. Highlight plays with no defense is not interesting to me. Watching a bunch of guys showboat with no defense is not interesting to me. I love the game of basketball and to me the All star game is a farce. It's about as much like Basketball as WWE is to MMA.
.
Those things you like about the ASG are the things that make it unwatchable to me. All that said I understand why some watch it. But to me it's a pathetic exhibition of no value. I'd rather watch kids play basketball than watch the ASG.

Fair enough

To offer a third point.

I only watch it when Jazz players are involved. I watch it as an extension of me supporting the Jazz. I have not watched it for several years as there has been no Jazz players involved.
