Would you trade ...

Good read about our Jazz, the Cavs, Bucks and others: http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-daily-trade-chatter-from-the-g-league-showcase/

But this is interesting: "League sources said things in Utah were starting to get contentious and that management and the coaching staff may not be on the same page with the direction of the roster and that change seems necessary."

Its rare anything like this gets out about the Jazz but if true, I wonder what the disconnect is?

To tank or not to tank?
Trade targets?
Personnel? (What players FO wants to include in trade)
Persisting with defensive identity?
Pivot around maxing DM?

I’d say not moving Rubio to the bench is illogical at this point and we’re resting on previous hype to rationalize the necessity of his starting position. I’d say clearly Quin is okay with continuing the Rudy/Derrick/Ricky lineup at least for (terrible) starts and (terrible) continuations in the third. However, I’d assume this is a decision DL stays out of and honestly feels we spent a price on Ricky (could cost us the opportunity to trade for someone like Niko) and we have to rationalize that.

If there's contention, it's probably DL taking the long view (after all, he's the master of the perpetual rebuild). And Snyder is highly competitive; he wants to win NOW. You also have reports that Gobert wants to rush back.

I think Lindsey HAS to do something before the deadline. He's talked big about making trades since his arrival, but he's largely come up empty-handed. Oh yeah, there was the blockbuster two years ago for Shelvin Mack.

Jazz only have two starters worth ****: Mitchell and Gobert. Two great draft picks, but Lindsey has failed to add others with his many mistakes. Now he has to add a couple via trades.

2018 cap space is a myth. 2018 free agents aren't worth it. We should be taking on 2019 expirings and take on whatever assets that come along with facilitating those deals.
Agree. The decision is really about adding players now like Mirotic, Fournier, or anyone else that might be available, committing to Hood and/or Exum, or setting the Jazz up for making offers in 2019. Of course, that latter strategy is extremely risky. Would the prospective UFA's even have interest in signing with Utah?

I really like Thabo, but his injury just made him an asset. We can get a ton in this market with expirings. Half of the league is over the luxury next year. We will have offers.

He’s making like $5M. What people in that salary range did you have in mind that other teams feel they need to dump, and what do you think they’ll include to be able to dump $5M?

The Jazz have succeeded largely without contributions from Hood or Exum (or Favors for that matter). I don't see the risk.

I wouldn't have traded Thabo before the injury. So in other words, he wasn't a trade asset in my mind.

Now that he is out for the year, his $5 million expiring contract is a very nice trade chip. Think about it, we now have Favors ($12 expiring), JoeJ ($10 expiring) and Thabo ($5 expiring). Half of the teams in the NBA are in the luxury tax for the 2018-19 season. We have close to $30 million in expirings. We could go into asset accumulation.

I think you’d be disappointed in what a team would give to clear $5M in salary. I don’t think we could even get a protected pick for $10+ expirings of JJ and Favors.

Wondering how the trade deadline and FA is going to shake out. Lots of rumors out there with beat writers, etc.
