I wouldn't be that upset. The Jazz can get to 18 million with Favors at his current rate. If you waive Favors and re-sign him (this can be done, right?) for 52/3, you can be at 20 million.

Then you can use that 20 million to sign a guy like Jeremy Lamb.

And if Tony's sources are right, then that probably means the Jazz dont think they can sign one of the big target max guys.

$20M on Lamb and bringing back Favors... where can I sign up for that?

The Favs waive and re-sign is an unlikely scenario... they won't do it just to clear an extra $2M in space. They would risk a team just outright claiming him and would have to wait out the waiver process. Even if it happened we really want to commit $17M a year to our backup center or continue to be the only team that plays two dudes who can't shoot or dribble?

The next story the keep Favs crowd will sell is that he's a trade asset... Is he? Cuz dude been on the trade block in perpetuity and we haven't gotten an offer good enough to pull the trigger. If we wanted Favs on a long term team friendly deal we should have done that last offseason. He had a much more limited market and there was a chance to get him at a number that makes it feasible to add to the roster while keeping him... Our desire for flexibility has cost us some flexibility with Favs.

If DL and Zanik are watching the playoffs thinking "We have to keep our offensively limited centers together" then they are dumb AF. Our next step will require us to trade some good things for potentially great things.

It's beyond ridiculous. I really don't think they see how mutually exclusive keeping Favors and taking the team to the next step really are. We're cooked. The cake is done baked. DL just wanting to put on a little icing and let that baby cool.

Also, you could say it's a smoke screen, but everything the track record shows that everything that's been rumored about "liking" guys and "wanting to keep guys" has happened. There's been no variation. There's no reason or precedent suggesting this could possibly be a poker face.

We really aren't the smokescreen types... we are pretty transparent imo. I get that Favs is a valuable player, but we haven't been able to flip that value for something that fits. Sucks to let go, but man if we are hoping to make changes around Favs it is really going to limit us.

And the Jazz did the deal for flexibility this year. If the information they are getting back is "Hey, none of these dudes want to sign here" then there isnt much they can do about it. They took the risk and it didnt pay off.

I think we should just all be prepared for disappointment this summer when we opt into another year of Faves, miss out on marquee free agents and sign some filler guys for value.

Running it back doesn't mean a 180, but sure feels like the FO will trot out a starting five like Rudy/Faves/Ingles/Crowder/Mitchell with Allen/Exum/Niang/O'Neale coming off the bench and some cheap vets/contracts as filler.

Maybe you actually get a true PG like Rozier or Beverly to possibly go alongside DM and keep Crowder as your sixth man, but I just can't see us really having a chance at Brogdon, Walker, Harris and will see them sign with markets such as LA, Brooklyn, NY, even ATL.

I would love to be proven wrong.

I mean, Favors had a 4.3 BPM last year. It sucks he can't play more because of the fit issues, but he's a huge part of the Jazz's success. I dont think guys like Bjelica, Mirotic, etc are upgrades over him even though they are better fits.

*If* the max free agents are off the table the answer should be to keep Favors, target Lamb as the 2nd scoring option, and try to add some vet pieces.

Jazz would have to heavily pursue Bogdanovic or Lamb, and really convince them they can up their game as the 2nd option on a 50 win team. Shouldn't be hard for either.

Uhh, there's nothing about Favors holding the team back. The Jazz were a 50 win team with him and Rubio. Yes, I think ideally it would be best to replace both with shooters who better fit the team, but it might be possible to only do one or the other. The Jazz upgrade from Rubio while keeping Favors, and you could have a 55+ win team on your hands.

But they’re not contenders, not really anyway. And keeping Favors just sets the team back a year every year he’s here.

I want Favors gone, but I’m not so sure this is entirely true. After Favors the Jazz never had much of a backup plan. IMO I’m guessing the jazz have had good offers we’ve never heard about, but because of the jazz unwillingness to let him go, nothings happened unfortunately.

I’ve heard rumors the Lakers are interested in him and would go after him if the jazz turn him loose

I'm just not sold on Lamb... it'd have to be a bargain deal (like $10-12M a year) and I see no scenario or reason why that would happen for us.

Dallas, Lakers, Clips, Kings could all claim Favs. Based on when he will be waived (likely close to his guarantee date of July 5th or 6th) those teams may have lost out on their primary targets by then. I'd say its probably only like a 35% chance he'd be claimed... but the chances he clears waivers and then doesn't feel a little scorned by us waiving him are a little lower. We could communicate beforehand that we'd like to bring him back after he clears waivers but I think we open ourselves up to losing him based on the timing.

I really feel like it's keep Favs on his one year unguaranteed amount or lose him.

IMO, I’m starting to think Favors will be back if we don’t hit on a max guy, and that’s not a good thing.

If they keep Favs I think a guy like Lamb isn't where the attention turns, Bogdonovic I could see, but I think the next play is re-negotiate with Grizz on Mike Conley. Could complete a trade with Korver, Crowder, Dante, Neto being the main out-going salary plus picks and young guys.

Unless they find a way to get Kemba, Tobias, Conley, or patch together multiple guys like Gay and Bogdonovic, or Gay and Brogdon, or Gay and Lamb (I like Rudy as the budget version of Tobias) then I think it if more just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Those moves are all tough/impossible if we don't move on from Favs.

I'm not sure if it is just misreading the market, but it seems like many of the national writers don't think Tobias is going to get a full max offer... or that it is 50/50 type of thing. I wonder if we are the ones misreading his market... maybe he doesn't? I'm fairly sure he gets multiple max offers if he solicits them. Just something surprising I've seen.
