... With that in mind, here's our annual spotlight on six of the most intriguing players to watch in the upcoming season. We avoid superstars and obvious first- and second-year curiosities. The goal is to find guys in new roles, facing new challenges, who might emerge as X factors for solid teams.

RODNEY HOOD, UTAH JAZZ

The moment Gordon Hayward hit "publish," Hood became the go-to scorer for this defense-first meat grinder that figures to be in the race for one of the West's last three playoff spots...

It is a decent article, but I absolutely DETEST web site that kick straight off with loud video clips when I just wanted to read. Let me click "play" if I want to see the video, otherwise keep it the **** off, or at least start off with the sound on mute. Son of a bitch. Some of us are surfing the web during conference calls dammit and don't need that **** during a conversation. :)

Agree. You can turn off "Autoplay" at ESPN by clicking on the settings link in the video itself. Should stop them from automatically starting like that in the future.

I can't stand the articles where the author thinks they have to give you 4 paragraphs of background before getting into the flesh and bones that the article headline advertised. Is there a purpose to this form of "journalism"?

Yeah. It's called "depth".

it was so hard to see him limping around all last season, i'mma just wait and see.

I agree. Not confident that he can make it through a season without injury, especially as our primary scorer. But he's gained some muscle so let's see.

Which could actually make him more prone to injury, but, yeah.

Hopefully what he's been doing more of is regularly seeing a specialist that tries to train him on better movement (i.e. Curry).

I just worry about the height he gets on his jumper. It just seems like guys get underneath his legs a lot.

Also, the whole he needs to go all the way to the basket and draw fouls... it just isn't his game and I could see that leading to an injury. I think I'd like him to make more threes and take even more than he does now. It is his most realistic path to efficiency.

Therein lies the rub. I rarely frequent ESPN, and I have actually done that in the past but apparently they update or something in between or I clear out my cookies and then it resets. Why not just make the non-autoplay the default? That is like saying "hey I am going to poke you in the eye unless you tell me not to, then after a while I will start doing it again until you tell me not to again". Just, no.

Leg days yo!

Glass ankles and leap and lean don't go together. I wish Hot Rod were still around. Hood's got the best hippity hop dribble.

I just thought about Hot Rod calling this team... damn it would have been great. I love Hot Rod... I'm sad.

I'm also intrigued by Rodney Hood.
And by Derrick Favors, and by Alec Burks, and Dante Exum, and Donovan Mitchell.
Oh yeah, and by Ricky Rubio, and by Ekpe Udoh, and by Jonas Jerebko.

I think I'm even a little intrigued by Joe Ingles, and Royce O'Neale, and Eric Griffin. And if you force me into a corner, you could probably even get me to say I'm intrigued by Nate Wolters.

My feelings toward Rudy Gobert involve a lot less intrigue than sheer hope and fear that he doesn't somehow regress or get injured.

Sorry, Joe Johnson, Thabo Sefalosha, and Raul Neto. I'm not really intrigued, but I hope you'll continue to bring what you've brought in previous seasons.

Oh, and Tony Bradley, I think my intrigue for you is going to have to wait a year. Ditto for you, Joel Bolomboy, if you manage to make the team.

But most of all, I'm just glad that this is the last weekend before something real starts so I'm not tempted to write stupid stuff like this anymore.

Rodney Hood has definitely been nicked with injuries, like Favors ,Burks and Exum. But with the injuries he has worked twice as hard to strengthen his body and try to avoid these injuries from happening again. As long as he hasn't suffered a serious injury there's no reason to think he isn't going to take a big step forward on being a go to guy for the Jazz.I think he takes a step forward just by his team mates being healthier.

Are you are saying more strength could lead to more injuries? Please elaborate. Any studies to back it up?

Depends on the injuries. If a player has knee/ankle/foot problems and they build their upper body, then more muscle means more weight on those problem areas.

I'll reference the Derrick Favors study of 2015-2017.

That's not really any issue for Hood. That's something bigs who hold a ton of weight have to be concerned with. Hood could use more mass everywhere to help absorb contact ala Hayward.
