Poker Game at Gameface's house. 2-18 @ 8pm

I'll plan on it. Don't know if I'll stay awake for the whole thing. Maybe I'll catch a nap before the game.

The starting time is not set in stone. I'm trying to accomodate different schedules and allow people time to get off work go home and then head over. In my past experience 7pm was a bit rushed for some folks. I'm on a night schedule right now so 8pm is like playing a morning game for me. I will say though that if the starting time is 8pm that means cards in the air at 8pm. If you are running late no problem, late buy-ins are ok up to the first break. But we will not be sitting around waiting for a few more people to show up before we start.

So for me to consider this a go I want at least 8 people who indicate they are committed to showing up. In my past experience if you've got 8 people who swear they will be there then you can be reasonably certain you'll get 5 people in the game. For me 5 is the bare min for starting a tournament.

I have a few guys I work with who sound very interested, so I'd say I can be pretty sure that it'll be me and 2-3 folks I work with. So if 4-5 people here commit then it sounds like we've got a game. If you're interested PM me and I'll give you my info. If after that you commit please, please, please show up or let me know ASAP that you've had a change of plans. I can set up a second table and work out the starting chip break down if it looks like there will be more than one table, but I have to re-arange furniture and such and I'd hate to do that if I don't need to.

Also, I'll be hapy to share my homebrew. If you want to taste it, no problem. If you're going back for thirds maybe consider thowing in a few bucks to cover the cost. Other than that feel free to bring your beverage of choice. I'm operating under the assumption that we're all adults who can take care of ourselves.

That reminds me, I can't let underage kids come to my house for poker and drinking, so if you're not of age please don't come.

I wish I knew how to play poker. It would be fun to come hang out and knock back a few brewskis with you dudes.

I don't have a problem with a few non-players coming out. If you want to come over and have a few beers and BS then you're more than welcome to do that.

That said I'm also ok if you want to bring a wife or girlfriend along (or husband or boyfriend for that matter), especially if they are serving as your DD. Keep in mind, though, they cannot participate in the game with you. The "one player to a hand" rule will be in effect.

While on the subject of rules, I use a very common poker rule book as my guide (I don't need to reference it in 99% of cases), it's called "Robert's Rules of Poker" and it was written by Bob Chiffon who has also developed the house rules for many major Las Vegas strip casinos. It can be found via google search or by visiting www.homepokertourney.com.

This is some serious ****, I like it. McFly, just show up man, poker is easy as pie to learn. It also appears that BigCatRat and I will be the only sober ones there -- I'm happy to drive your plastered asses home if you want to get dropped off. PM me to set it up.

That's not my style. I'm a friendly drunk. The worst I'll do is pass out sitting up, which is a virtual guarantee in a 3 hour game. I'd worry more about divvying up my chips than broken stuff.

I'm totally cool with that.

Dang, I'm getting kind of excited. It's been well over a year since I've hosted a poker game.

So the way I've done things in the past is to draw for seats. However, I have found it makes the game move along much more smoothly when there is a dedicated dealer. So, we will all draw, but your actual seat will be oriented based on what the dealer draws because the dealer will be seated in the center of the table (The tables are 4'x8'). Anyone is welcome to volunteer as the dealer, but in most cases no one does so I will act as dealer when I'm hosting the game. Two decks per table are used, one that is being used for the current hand and another that is being shuffled by the person on the button. When the hand is over the person to the right of the person shuffling cuts (I use a cut card) and the deck is passed to the dealer to be used for the new hand. The deck from the previous hand is then passed to the person who is now on the button to be shuffled.

Usually when we're down to the last few players there will be someone besides the active players shuffling and passing the deck to the dealer. Mostly that is to speed things up when we're down to the end and to allow the players to focus on the game.

I hope that arrangement is acceptable. If you have any objections to that method let me know and we can work it out.

Also, just want to make it clear that all money paid in gets paid out. There is no house cut, fee, rake or advantage of any kind. I haven't nailed down payout structure, but typically for one full table, 9-10 players, it will be split 50% for 1st place, 30% for second, 20% for third, rounded to the nearest dollar. I typically aim to pay the last place paid no less than the buy-in and up to around double the buy-in.

For example, if 10 people played there would be $200 in the prize pool. First place would get $100, second would get $60 and third would get $40.

Thanks for my personal invite too, ***.

This brings up a good point. Parking spaces can get scarce so carpooling is encouraged. I live very near Jordan Landing, so if you're coming over with buddies that might be a good place to meet up and head over in the same car. But if you don't mind walking a block then no biggie.

Holy ****, what did I get myself into? I'm used to sitting around with a few guys laughing and telling dirty jokes, not having to pay attention to who the hell is on the button so they can be shuffling.
That being said, I'm down to taxi you drunks home after the game's over.

The reason to do it this way is precisely so that you don't have to worry about too much. The alternative in most games I've played in is to pass the deck around the table and have each person deal out the cards. That's generally a bad idea on an 8ft table. Cards get flipped, the dealer doesn't pay attention and has to be reminded to turn over the next card, etc. Many people aren't comfortable dealing, but most people can shuffle. If you're not comfortable shuffling you can usually get someone sitting next to you to do it for you.

By acting as dealer I can keep the game moving and avoid a lot of common problems that come up. I started doing it after playing in a game where it was done. It is really a lot nicer as a player to have someone taking care of all the dealer duties.

aw, this reminds me of my dad - he still plays poker with a group that started nearly 50 years ago - - and there are still 3 of the original 8 men in the group. They only meet about 6x per year now, it used to be monthly. When I was a kid he'd let me sort the chips when it was his turn to host, I thought that was so cool.

never really did learn to play myself though

That's the kind of thing I had in mind when I bought and built all my poker gear. I've hosted plenty of games but never really got the kind of group going that I really wanted. Now my uber top-quality poker gear just sits around looking cool.

Hopefully I'm not scaring people off by being too eager. I really am excited about the possibility of having a good poker game at my house.

I dont know if anyone else feels like this...but Gameface is one solid dude.
