The Bill of Rights Series: Amendment 3

Sure. Pretty straight forward. Military does not have the right to take over a home.

We'll see if that comes in handy if/when war hits our shores.

Wait, from some peoples posts on here and Facebook I figured that obama destroyed the constitution, shredded the bill of rights and had already become a tyrannical monarch of the usa.

This didn't happen?

Nor did the Affordable Healthcare Act usher in a dystopian era characterized by a federal government takeover of the healthcare system, faceless bureaucrats deciding who gets to live and who has to die, nor an egregious loss of individual freedom to a rapacious federal government.

Free markets for health insurance continue to exist and function, more people have access to affordable healthcare, faceless insurance bureaucrats are no longer deciding who gets insurance coverage and who does not (and thus, who lives and who dies) and hundreds of millions of people are no less free than they were a few years ago.

Who would have thought it?

I'm still holding my breath. When you cook a frog you do it degree by degree, not all at once.

Keeping my options open either way.

You seem to be assuming there is some secret malicious intent. Why?

Sure, that's reasonable. No one knows how these sorts of things play out in practice over time.

But it's safe to say that that the right wing hysteria around Obama care was, to this point, just that: hysteria.

(A totally unrelated tangent on hysteria. Back around the turn of the 20th century, Dr.'s diagnosed a condition in women called 'hysteria,' which they treated by sexually stimulating female patients. So, essentially, a woman diagnosed with hysteria would go to the good Dr. who would then stimulate her (how graphic can I be here?) to ******. Sounds kind of weird, but in the context of our more sexually uptight times, I suppose it makes sense. Thus while folks on the right still bemoan the sexual revolution, I'm guessing there are plenty of women out there grateful for the emergent realization that women are sexual beings too and can actually enjoy sex.)

I've got a mild case of hysteria right now. I think I'm gonna go take a shower and "take my medicine."

You seem to be assuming there is not.

I'm not saying either way, but I'm leaving open the door that there could be. You seem to have it shut if you are not open to the possibility.

There are always people and groups out there conspiring for power, money and whatever they can get their hands on. Why would today be any different?

Reagan also "was" a democrat in his early live. but his policy suggest he was still a democrat even when he presumably turned republican

I don't care.

That picture just made me laugh

Let's put it this way. Whatever Obama has done, he doesn't get the last word on it. Those people who chose to defend their "rule of law", their "Constitution", or their rights as human beings have the ultimate authority to re-assert them at any time. We're peaceful folks, as long as we have votes, we're gonna use them, as our first remedy.

irtop:

During the Revolutionary Way, and leading up it, it was commonplace for the British to conscript property as well as persons into service. Much of what is in the Bill of Rights, is responsive to specific abuses experienced in the colonial times, which was specifically to be denied to the successor government.

When Americans decide it's time to end current governmental abuses, I'm sure there will be more "Amendments" designed to limit the excesses of bureaucrats and elected officials.

I guess part of the reason why I was interested in this thread is because I'd be absolutely horrified if we abolished our constitution and were required to create a new one. I don't want either the Democratic constitution or the Republican constitution. Either one would be a significant downgrade to what we already have.

But that doesn't mean what we have is perfect, or even all that good. It's just better than any alternative I can imagine.

little known fact certan middle and Southern American countries modeled their constitution after the us constitution. but the difference is it isnt considered as holy.

for example Mexican constitution has the right to bear arms. but nowadays gun ownership is highly controlled and damn restrictive!

ongoing historical amendments have done a lot of good so far. Some, like the IRS and FedRes, maybe not so good. Looking for people to insist on their rights ought to warm the hearts of Libertarians. Probably a better way for the Libertarian Party to make a difference than run for office. . . .
