What's new

LDS General Conference Fall 2015

Renlund is going to be a fan favorite for disaffected mormons, similar to Uchtdorf, Eyring, Holland and Christofferson.

I thought everyone loved Uchtdorf, he seems pretty mellow to me. And I don't remember him ever saying anything controversial. I understand some of the others, for instance, I have a friend who still struggles to pay tithing years after Elder Eyring talked about selling his extra property in San Francisco to get out of debt. And holland gave some fiery sermons as byu president and in his early days, but Uctdorf? Who are these disaffected people?

In other news, I liked Elder Andersons talk, and Larry Lawrence from Saturday morning.

Many good talks, but my favorite was Uchtdorf's talk about simplifying. I'm pretty sure it will be totally lost on 75% of Utah Mormons.

My least favorite, far and away, was "Ponderize". Too gimmicky. Felt like an attempt to manufacture a new buzzword.

I don't think so. It is frustrating that the church does not have a more diverse leadership, but the issue lies more in the past than in the current times. These guys have basically been being groomed to be apostles for at least a decade. There just aren't isn't a lot of diversity in the top levels yet, and it seems it will take some time for that to change. There are a lot of new members of the quorum of the seventy who are from somewhere other than utah or north america, but they have been called to that position relatively recently. It takes time for them to get the experience that others have just by virtue of being in the leadership positions longer.

Those are my thoughts. Maybe I am wrong, but in my mind the alternative is that the old dudes are still racist and they think God never changed his mind about black people.

I think there is a lot of truth in this. And that bothers me. It feels like the Church is more worried about LDS, Corp sometimes than proclaiming the gospel of Christ.

Oh well, life goes on. I'll be baptizing my oldest boy later this year and am looking forward to it. He's a good kid who tries to do the right things. I'm excited for him.

I am so happy that God knows me and hears my white American of northern European origin prayers. How long until the other half of the church is represented and has a say in actual, meaningful leadership?

Yup was very disappointed in the callings.... So went and watch "Book of Mormon" instead of conference!!

I agree... I bet half the quorum was like hell no I'm not going to do that!!!

Makes me think of that Prancerize video by that woman who was trying to create a new dance/exercise - that was a hoot!

Anyhow, small steps, right? It does take time for folks to rise up thru the ranks to achieve positions of leadership in any organization.

How long did it take for Catholics to choose a pope from the Western Hemisphere? A few centuries?

Yeah, not a fan of the ponderize thing, but you lead all of D1 basketball in scoring and shoot 58% FGs while you do it, you get a mulligan from me during your first conference talk.

At least there is one non American. There's a German in there.

That's been one of my wife's biggest complaints ever since we moved to Utah. We'll see if Pres. Uchtdorf's message gets across. (I'm with you... probably not.)

On the plus side it's one of the handful of talks that I can remember without having to look at the summary. So in that sense it was pretty successful.

I think it was designed that way. I will remember it too, not because of the spirit I felt, but because it was catchy.

Sorry. I mean disaffected Mormons will love him. A lot of people who have problems with the church like the guys listed above because they are not the typical conservative Mormons. That is interesting about the view on eyring being out of touch. I like these guys, but they definitely are far removed from having to do blue collar work for a living.

Guys, ponderize was a business endeavor designed by Durrant and his kids to make some money. It's all over the news. They made a website ponderize.us and had a bunch of merchandise ready to go before conference.

This is hilarious.

I did a perfunctory search and didn't find anything. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'd like to either watch or read about this talk. It sounds interesting...

I appreciate the response. It sounds like a plausible scenario but even if it is the reality, what you're saying is that the leadership of the church didn't think diversity was important in the year 2005.

That is why it is frustrating.

ok maybe my opinion doesn't count for much since it's coming from a position of white privilege and all that, but I don't think you can automatically jump to this conclusion without knowing the places of all the moving pieces

perhaps there's a certain protocol that's typically followed and they're grooming a diverse group to move up the ranks but nobody was yet in position to advance

from my quick reading of what's been posted, it seems that is a large part of it and the next group of leaders to move up will reflect more diversity

or so it may be hoped
