First of all, this is not a thread to debate whether or not you like these two as play-by-play guys. Whether you like them or not, the fact is that that over the last few years these two have spent quite a bit of time around Deron when the microphones aren't rolling. Both were very candid this afternoon about several off the court conversations they've had with D-Will. In fact, I thought I heard Locke mention that he felt he could be a bit more candid now that D-Will is gone.
For those who missed it, the overall rundown:
-Locke said he had 2 private conversations with D-Will in regards to whether he thought he'd leave Utah or not. He said the first conversation made him think D-Will was definitely a goner. He said the 2nd conversation was Deron spit-balling about what close by state he would move to if he did indeed stay with Utah. Locke made it pretty clear that D-Will didn't care for SLC or any of the surrounding areas. He said he felt like D-Will's priorities for leaving Utah were: #1- VERY sick of the cold weather, #2 Honestly didn't think Utah was good enough, and #3- He does indeed want to play for a large market team.
-Boler said he also was certain D-Will would leave based on private conversations. He went on to say that much of Jazz management see's D-Will as a player who will likely play for 3 or 4 teams over the course of his career and quite a few different coaches. Boler said it was too bad because Utah fans wanted to love Deron and would have treated him like a folk hero his entire career but there was always something stopping Deron from truly embracing Utah and it's fans. He said he always got the sense from being around D-Will that Utah was just not what he wanted out of his career. Said he always saw something lacking in Deron in regards to being happy here.
Both agreed- and I agree with them that Utah made a good move and basically made a move they had to make. Deron WAS NOT staying in Utah regardless of who they brought in. Both pointed out that Utah losing Deron for nothing was a huge possibility and would probably devestate the Jazz franchise long term.
