Prepare for the Worst

What is the bad part about this? Do we get worse or something? Why do people always expect some miracle and then act bummed out if it doesnt happen? Your scenario is what, realistically, should happen. We have the 9th pick in the lotto. If, somehow, it goes better than this, awesome.

Add a #9, subtract Boozer. Do we get worse? Yes. We certainly don't get much closer to matching up against the Lakers. LA is already sending out rumors to FA's. They want a defensive SG like Raja. And I bet they somehow upgrade at PG.

The gap is widening. And getting the #9, but losing Boozer means Utah will just be treading water at best.

You watch, the Jazz will draft Babbitt at #9 and then KOC and Greg Miller will say with totally straight faces in July that they did everything they could to keep Boozer, but he was determined to sign elsewhere. No, I don't want Boozer back. But $3M will buy an extra 1st in an extremely deep draft. Add that to a 3-yr guaranteed deal and you'll pay around $3M/per for a mid-1st. In a deep draft, that's chicken feed. Certainly better than signing scrubs like Price, Gaines and Jeffers. And what big can you find at that price. That's a bargain to spend on a Brackins or Orton.

Based upon what? How would any of us know how hard we are shaking the bushes?

My guess is that this time of year every single GM and their staff are working 24/7 trying to improve their team, including us. Moving up in the draft is tough to do

Jazz always seem to wait till last minute to pull off a deal, whether its the draft or trade deadline. So Jazz may still have something up their sleeve tomorrow.

Guys, I hate to break this to you, but the Jazz are going to announce tomorrow a move to Vegas. I've been trying to hint this to you guys for days. Its just in the best interest of the Lakers.

Even Hayward?

In my case the question should be, even Monroe/Alrdrich? I like Hayward. In my mind he doesn't fit the profile of a #9 pick, but he just might in this draft. He's scrappy and just seems to know how to play.

Deron Williams is the guy that changed my perception of the draft process though. I was ripping him before the draft, the night of the draft, the summer league, etc. Guys take time to adjust before you see what they are all about. He was extremely sloppy during the RMR that year. I'm blown away with how good he turned out to be after that start.

That being said, I look forward to reading you guys rip the Jazz picks a new one tomorrow night.

Yet another case of unrealistic expectations from several posters in this thread. How people could still believe the Jazz should be getting a superstar in this draft are living in a fantasy. The draft is a frickin' crapshoot every season, even more so this season. Look at the recent 9th picks of the draft and you'll realize superstars or even a few times all-star just don't get picked as late as 9. 2009: Demar DeRozan, 2008: DJ Augustin, 2007: Joakim Noah, 2006: Patrick O'Bryant, 2005: Ike Diogu are the lastest #9 picks. Noah is the best player out of that group and he is just a solid starter. The depth in this draft just isn't there to expect a superstar to land at 9. If we get a solid starter out of the ninth pick we should be happy, because half the teams don't even get that out of the 9th pick. I realize that's hard to accept because this Knicks pick has been anticipated for years but it's reality. Deal with it.

I've figured KOC would have done something to get one of the available late teen picks by now (Miami, Chicago, Boston). The memphis pick would probably be enough to get it done. We really need a quality wing and defensive center out of this draft. A late teen pick would be great to gamble on Whiteside, Sanders, or Orton, and even if they bust they will still be better than Koufas, Fes, or aging Okur. Maybe KOC will do something on draft night, we'll see .

Isn't that the better way to go about it anyway unless somebody is just dropping a pot of gold in your lap via a trade previous to draft night? Let the draft play out and when somebody you think is underrated is on the board at a pick that is being shopped, be aggressive and throw some assets at it.

I remember last year when everyone hated the Maynor pick, then he was better than DWill, and then fans were outraged that he was traded. The mob is fickle.

I loved the Maynor pick from the beginning...but yeah, I agree.

How many cliches do you think KOC uses tomorrow night?

O'Connor will mumble something about taking the BPA regardless of need. He'll tell us he made a lot of phone calls, listened to a lot of propositions. But in the end, Utah just didn't have the right assets to trade up or down. And nothing was out there that would have made the team better.

Then fast forward to mid-July after Boozer has signed with New Jersey, New York, Miami or wherever. KOC will again say they really wanted to re-sign Carlos, but he wanted a fresh start somewhere else. Ane he'll say they explored some sign and trade possibilities but nothing was out there that would have the team better.

Know why the Jazz don't need a PR person? Because their speeches haven't changed in 30 years.

I am really not liking the way this draft is heading. All of the mock drafts now have guys like Davis and Udoh going before the Jazz pick leaving us with Babbitt or Hayward. Not that those guys well be bad players but I really wanted at least some form of a shot blocking big that has the potential to become a good player.

The one thing I can glean from all of the messages boards I've been reading and the sports talk radio I've been listening to, is that there are going to be unhappy Jazz fans no matter who we pick. I think there would even be people upset if we traded up and picked up Evan Turner. I have set my expectations low considering the relative weak draft position we have and how unlikely it is we'll trade up. The good news is that the Jazz FO has access to a lot more information about the players, so hopefully they will be able to make a decision that's best for the team.

I know the first round draft history has been spotty, but hopefully we'll get a solid player.

Question: Did the Jazz move up to #3 prior to the 2005 Draft? If not, were there strong indications of the Jazz moving up to #3 to draft Paul or Williams prior to the draft? Or did it come out of nowhere on draft night?

My expectation for the 9th pick is that I hope we get a good player that can be a starter or a key player off the bench. I do not think that is too high. I understand that moving up is difficult but if it really is true that the Sixers are making the #2 pick available if we take on Brand then the Jazz should consider it. This even makes more since if Boozer walks.

Another issue I have is if the Jazz cannot move up then they should go for another mid 1st round pick, the current roster is lacking talent and there are several roster spots that need to be filled. I know I get frustrated when I see divisional teams like Portland, OKC make moves before the draft and there is not a peep coming out of SLC.

Jazz organization believes roster spots are better filled with veterans. After all, guys like Devin Brown, Milt Palacio, etc. will ALWAYS be better than some snot-nosed kid with only a year of college under his belt.

Even when we draft in the lottery...McLeod was much, much better than that rookie named Deron. Seriously, is anybody in the late teens better than Gaines or Jeffers? Is any big better than perhaps going after Jarron to fill in until Okur returns. IMO, we should just trade all our draft picks. Just see which FA's are playing the best in the D-League. No need to spend money unless absolutely necessary.
