Why is defending yourself an intractable offense?

What's the point of going after someone just defending themselves?

I could see that if the moderators took care of the initiator, then maybe it would makes sense to not have to defend yourself. But here on JazzFanz that's not the case. In fact, any punishment for the initiator is deliberately hidden from everyone. That's if anything is even done at all.

Day in and day out there are the same people on here attacking other people for what they say. They apparently are not discouraged from doing because they keep doing it, and are still here. So from the standpoint of the person being attacked, why cant they attack back? I've never understood the reason for going after the person who strikes back. What sense does that make?

All this just points to an unfair, and unjust system put in place to cater to certain people, and certain ideas.

JazzFanz is not fair and free place of ideas, to put it as simply as I can. Moderators pick and choose who they want to have a voice. Including themselves.

Defending yourself is not in and of itself infractable. Obviously. It's HOW YOU GO ABOUT defending yourself that may prove to be infractable.

Anyone sensing a theme yet?

Why should how you go about it make any difference?

If you aren't going to do anything about the people who initiate the the conflict, then why do anything about the person defending themselves? Regardless of what they say. It's like saying, it ok to call someone an idiot first, but don't you dare say you are ****ing moron back to someone who called you an idiot.

Wouldn't it just make more sense to do something to discourage the first part?

If the same people are the ones constantly initiating fights, and they never are banned, then whatever rule you think is in place and is working, actually isn't working. To someone outside of the moderator circle, all we see is the same person doing the same thing, and apparently they can just keep getting away with it. I shouldn't have to sit there and let them attack over and over again with seemingly no repercussions for the them doing it.

The system is broke. I don't know how you can't see it.

If you really believe that this is ok, then the next time a criminal violates you or your family, you should just say you are fine with it, because the initiator is not wrong, it's only wrong to do anything back. Don't bother calling the cops either, because that would just be the equivalent to back seat moderating. Just take it, and do nothing.

I can't believe you are seriously asking this.

We warn/infract both behaviors equally.

How about you just focus on modifying your behavior to bring it in line with board rules, and don't worry so much about what others may or may not be getting away with? Or, if you want to make sure that we aren't overlooking anything (which we sometimes do), feel free to report problematic posts by others when you run across them.
