Because if you allow penis into women's bathrooms then everyone is now allowed in there. All men and all women. I can put on a wig and lipstick and a dress and go in there if I feel like it if you allow penis in there.

Because we have an opportunity to make it up just a little to a very oppressed minority. It's the decent, human thing to do. Until very recently, you could get fired for being transgender, you were exponentially more likely to be sexually assaulted, you could have kids taken away if you had any, etc. All this isn't going to go away overnight, but we're making strides as a society. And this bathroom issue is just a little thing we can do to help. I mean, how can you say you accept someone's right to decide what gender they want to be but then say you don't allow them to choose the bathroom that goes with that gender?

What I don't understand is, if this is such a big thing that people believe they should be allowed to discriminate over it, why has it not been an issue previously? Were the women and children safe before NCs ruling but now they aren't?

It still appears to me that people are using this as a way to justify their feelings of distaste. It wasn't an issue until people were told that they should be freaking out about it.

It is an election cycle and one party needed a rallying cry to fix their divided members. Is this it?

I don't want this to come off as offensive, because I am genuinely curious what people think.

I read that 40% of transgendered attempt suicide. Read somewhere else that 20% of homosexuals attempt suicide. I think the average for non-LGBT is 4-5% in regards to suicide attempts. 40% is an astronomical figure. Should we assume that all of that is because of bullying, not fitting into typical culture, etc etc, or should we look at it from a mental problem as well? Fwiw, 40% of people with schizophrenia attempt suicide as well. I think it's important to have the distinction made so we can help people as best that we can.

I think you are underestimating the mental strain caused by not feeling right in your own body or your own culture.

Fishonjazz is doing himself a real disservice here. He's going to read some of these posts in 4-5 years and have to acknowledge he was a moron. It's going to be that obviously wrong based upon the experiences over time. Just as wrong as all the threads we had in the past about all the hell that would be unleashed if homosexuals could openly serve in the military.

What I see is people freaking out about rape culture (literally every thing that fishonjazz is arguing is about what pervy straight guys will do, not about transgender people) and using that as the cudgel because transgender people aren't "real" to them. They probably don't know any. They probably don't understand the anxiety that occurs when you're forced to perform a specific gender role. So relatively outlandish crap becomes acceptable basis to do harm because those people don't matter to them in the first place.

Must be nice to be able to choose to be tough. I didn't have that choice. I lived through a brutal ethnic war when I was still a kid. My dad was in the army for three years. I only saw him every couple of months when he was on leave. I used to dread the sound of our phone ringing because I always assumed it'd be someone calling to tell us he was killed. Luckily, he wasn't. My mum's brother was, though. This was all before I even hit my teens. But yeah, I hope you can understand that I'm not really into volcanoes or other first-world boredom cures that add adversity to your otherwise boring life. I had enough adversity for a life time. Forgive me for wanting my life to be easy and not really seeing the point of "making myself tougher," but I think I've paid my dues. And I don't care if that makes me a pansy.

This issue came about because the Obama administration mandated that government buildings and companies with over 10 employees had to comply. The NC legislation was in response to that. So the group that turned it into an issue was the opposite of the group you are suggesting it is.

Newsflash (and this may be difficult for you to comprehend)-- there exists a world outside America.

In this world, there are municipalities, regions, and nations that allow Trans people to use the restroom matching their gender identity.

Please post all of the proof you can find that these legislations have led to an increase in molestation of any kind.


Until then, sit down & don't contribute to an issue that you don't understand-- especially when your prejudice leads to other posters leaving this forum.

The concept of transgenderism is not simply putting on a wig and lipstick. Again, you seem to be willingly ignorant on the concept of gender.

There's an argument to be made on separating via sex and not gender, but the reasoning you give is pretty unsustainable. Currently the stigma of looking womanish or manish but forced into using facilities that seem set for a group of people he/she doesn't identify with is reason enough.

There are issues with transgenderism as a whole that I have from an anthropological standpoint, but they don't really deal with where people go to the bathroom.
