Pick is Gordon Hayward; ESA crowd boos

There just has to be a trade in the works. There is no way this pick makes any sense without a trade.

#1: Hayward at #9 is insane.
#2: We have so much depth at that spot we had to give Brewer away.
#3: Okur is coming off a possible career ending injury.
#4: Boozer is a free agent.
#5: AK can't even stay healthy at sf, no way he can bang at pf all season.

Just a mind blowing pick. And I'm not even saying the guy will suck, just saying the Jazz clearly have other needs, and there were other players on the board that will be just as good (or better) and fill a need for the Jazz.

Unbelievable pick. Worthy of someone getting fired even.

You know, the last pick I can recall being decried as "insane" was Jason Thompson going to the Kings. Same type thing as a kid from smaller college going way early.

Yes, Hayward at #9 (or maybe #19) is insane. But Korver will be gone, so the SG/SF depth is stable, and it has been proposed that maybe AK will slide to play some time at PF. But it goes back to what is going to defend a playoff team. Hayward is maybe good for an end-of quarter shot (although 30% 3-pointers doesn't suggest it), but he will be a liability for wing defense. Utah has wasted a single-digit pick. That's my prediction.

Good point. People are morons here in a lot of ways. There was NO one there who was a sure thing. It wouldnt have mattered who the Jazz picked, pretty much the exact same people would bitch and moan because that is their lot in life. Only person I would have reather seen was Aldrich. No big deal, it was the 9th pick. Take a shot and see what happens. The moans that this pick makes DWill leave are as stupid too. Who was the guy at 9 who would have made him stay, assuming he is leaving anyway, which I dont think he will. Finally, the race stereotype card is played, as usual. Damn the Jazz to hell for picking the smartest guy who had the BEST workout for them instead of just going for the highest jumper. What were they thinking? Its funny when some of you make it seem like the Jazz HAVE to pick a black player, regardless of who they really wanted, just to make you feel better about your so called stereotype complex.

We also booed when Raul Lopez, Curtis Borchart, Mo Almond, and Kosta Koufus were picked. How'd those work out?

the point isn't that we booed because he sucks. We booed because we have much more pressing needs, players available to address those needs, and we ignored them for a player who wasn't picked by anyone to go nearly as high.

The problem is that Hayward doesn't project to have the highest ceiling, so people only what players can be at the very top and not what they likely will be. As said, the guys the Jazz wanted were gone, so they had to go to plan B. I'm not a big fan of the pick, so I'll take a "wait and see" approach.

We don't have any other choice but to wait and see. But the fact that KOC even just acknowledged they have a need for a big man and still pick Hayward is pretty startling. I'm not usually the reactionary type, but it's pretty hard not to at this point.

If there is no trade in the works we might as well call it quits on this season too. The need was a defensive big. We didn't even get close to getting one.

He was picked as high as #8 on one mock draft. Many had him at #10 so that is clearly wrong or you just made it up.

I hope you're right - I wouldn't count on it though.

Didn't someone compare him to Luke Jackson on ESPN - got to be the first time ever a top ten pick was compared to a player that wasn't drafted.

Ugh..

I guess you don't remember Deron Williams bein picked 3rd a few years back, then, eh?
People who were criticizing the pick were preferring Chris Paul. And Paul was better in his first year or so. But the claim was over a small amount of difference for most people. Where the Jazz were right with DW was in the durability department. Hayward's subpar speed and strength (durability) is a reason to question this year's pick.

Luke Jackson was drafted. He was just a monumental bust in the NBA.
